The Pulse of PSMS

The Pulse of PSMS

To my current and future newsletter subscribers-

After publishing only one edition of my Journey to Zero newsletter, I reflected on how narrow that topic is (and the fact that I can only have one newsletter on LinkedIn)...even though I love to debate the zero harm approach.

So, since I am in this for the long-haul, I decided to take a step back and align my newsletter with how I already spend most of my energy engaging on LinkedIn - with Pipeline Safety Management Systems (PSMS) of course!

Going forward, this newsletter will focus on spotlighting advances in pipeline safety and will also showcase all the great engagement and value coming from the LinkedIn PSMS Group (join here if you are not already a member: https://www.dhirubhai.net/groups/8650649/).

If you subscribed after my first newsletter, I hope you will continue to read future editions.

If you are not already subscribing, please give it a try. Please subscribe, leave a comment and I hope you will be back in a month to read my next edition.

So, back to this last edition in 2022. I'd like to dedicate it mostly to recapping the great work that is coming out of the LinkedIn Pipeline Safety Management Systems (PSMS) Group.?A lot of people came together to make 2022 a great year for sharing and learning in the PSMS space.

How the LinkedIn PSMS Group is Innovating

On December 16, 2022, the LinkedIn PSMS Group delivered its first ever Practice Exchange.??

Exchange participants sign up to get access to a highly coveted 9 member industry panel to solicit thought leadership on their PSMS related practices, programs or ideas. This informal exchange helps participants increase their access to diversity of experience and thought, improve their PSMS efforts and?overall increase their understanding of pipeline safety.?

Our very first Practice Exchange participants were:

Laura Anderson (CenterPoint Energy)

Adam Lanier (NiSource)

Kelson McDaniel (National Grid)

Carrie Heglund, MBA Heglund (Southwest Gas)

The Practice Exchange's panel members and co-leads serve a one-year term.?We are incredibly fortunate to have the following thought leaders engaged well into 2023:

Lauren Anderson (panel member)

Amy Willis (panel member)

Jim Howe (panel member)

James Upton Jr. (panel member)

Jeff Wiese (panel member)

Jim Francis (panel member)

Graham Emmerson (panel member)

David Murk (panel member)

Stephen Allen (panel member)

David Toth (co-lead)

David Spangler CSP, ASP, CFEI, EPSE (co-lead)

But the Practice Exchange was no overnight success. A LinkedIn PSMS best practices sub-group was formed in 2021 and gradually over time (and through the dedication of its members) it became the Practice Exchange.?Many thanks to our esteemed panel members and co-leads for the countless hours of planning, rehearsing and organizing that went into launching our first Practice Exchange.

Special Thanks to Ashley Donnini

Ashley Donnini (Lola Link Consulting LLC) is a dear friend and also my strategic partner on this journey of making the LinkedIn PSMS Group THE resource for learning, sharing and growing as an industry in the areas of pipeline safety and the implementation of API RP 1173.?I always knew that I would eventually need help scaling the LinkedIn PSMS Group so that it could reach its true potential and Ashley stepped up in 2021 to do that and so much more.?She has been instrumental in maturing the Group's value proposition and has a natural gift for creating marketing collateral (I could go on...). I will always be eternally grateful for her friendship and collaborative partnership.?If you don't know Ashley, please check out her profile.?She is involved in a lot of incredibly important and forward-thinking efforts in the utility sector.

Quick Shout-Out to Jim Schauer , James Cross & Coffee with Jim & James

I really can't say enough great things about Jim and James.?I was so grateful to have been a guest (along w/ Ashley) on the Coffee with Jim & James podcast this year.?They are doing great things in the energy industry and deserve every bit of gratitude we can collectively send their way.?If you don't know who they are, please check them out today...then find their podcast and start tuning in.?Please share with your friends and colleagues.?You will not be disappointed.

A Short Story

Just in case you are wondering if the LinkedIn PSMS Group is worth your time, I will share one last quick story to illustrate my commitment to PSMS and the LinkedIn PSMS Group.?A year and a half after founding the LinkedIn PSMS Group, I happened to be sitting in front of an interview panel interviewing for a PSMS leadership role.?Admittedly, I am not a great interviewee.?I'm sure it has something to do with me not wanting to talk about myself - and boast about my accomplishments (obviously a problem when you are trying to land a job).?At the end of the interview though, I was asked why I thought I was the right person to fill the leadership role.?My response: "This is my legacy."??

I'm sure that statement didn't really resonate with the panel as it was an intangible. Be certain though that it was 100% heartfelt. I never did get that role but I am still grateful for that moment of clarity during the interview process.?I believe it was the first time I had ever verbalized my deep commitment to PSMS...and that particular moment galvanized my faith in what I was doing in this space...and what I had started back in February 2018.?

Those of you who have participated in LinkedIn PSMS Group events have probably seen me where a couple #PSMS t-shirts while hosting over the years.?If you ever see the one with the quote "This is my legacy." printed on it...now you know the meaning behind it.

Founding the LinkedIn PSMS Group started with one decision...but it has grown into so much more than I could have ever hoped for.?I will remain forever grateful for that and everyone involved over the years.

This is a collaborative effort and you all deserve every bit of credit for its success.

Well, that's it for 2022.
