Going the extra 5,000 miles??
The distance between Rome and Beijing was practically zero on June 7th, 2024, with Professor Zhang Xu successfully performing prostate surgery on a patient in China, from Italy.
This is a significant breakthrough for the healthcare industry, enabling greater care access for the military, rural communities, and disaster victims. These patients often have difficulty receiving the care they need due to geographical barriers that limit them during times of need. So, with the emergence of telesurgery, geographical barriers are eliminated providing higher quality care to individuals who cannot reach the specialists they need in a timely manner.
However, Professor Zhang Xu discusses a major challenge when it comes to telesurgery…and that is latency when it comes to communication. Luckily the communication during Professor Zhang Xu’s surgery was almost real-time with a delay of only 135 milliseconds. However, this might not always be the case when it comes to more rural areas due to the prevalence of connectivity issues, which must be considered before the widespread adoption of telesurgery.
Professor Zhang Xu’s success is an important milestone that is sure to improve care access and act as just the beginning of the emergence of telesurgery worldwide.
Back to the Basics??
Weeks after a ransomware attack, McLaren Health Care confirmed on August 26th that their IT operations had been restored. However, the effects are ongoing while they continue to recover from this breach.
Patients and doctors went back to manual processes during this time, including bringing printed medication lists and lab orders to appointments and handwriting surgical notes. So, now care teams are tasked with inputting all of this data into the electronic health records, which may take weeks to be fully reflected in the system.
This breach underscores the importance of having a business continuity plan because while there was not much that McLaren could have done to avoid these manual processes and their extended recovery times, they are showing initiative when it comes to their cybersecurity practices. After identifying the suspicious activity, the cybersecurity team ensured that all systems were quickly shut down and is continuing to investigate which/if any data was compromised and will reach out directly to patients or employees if they find evidence that their information was stolen.?
