?? Publishing Pain & Suffering? Not necessary! ??

I remember (barely) signing up for my first Amazon publishing account back in 2004.

And I vaguely remember answering "yes" to the question "Do you want us to convert this to an eBook file?"

Turns out that "yes" changed my life. ??

That was back before Kindle was a household item (and word) when everyone's goal was to get an agent, and a publisher.

My how times have changed! This is my 20th year in publishing, and self-publishing my first book changed my life.

It's one of the reasons writing and publishing books, and helping others do the same (and build empires around those books) has become my life's work.

But it hasn't always been sunshine, multiple streams of income, and big royalty deposits.

I've made just about every publishing mistake possible. ????♀?

Checking the wrong boxes, failing to check the right boxes (or fill them in correctly).

Failing to optimize my books, missing broken links, typos, errors, and so much more. Once again: ????♀?

As one of my clients said today, "Some mistakes, once you make them, cannot be unmade."

And here's the thing: when it comes to being an author, you've got three real choices:

• Traditional publishing. While it's the gold standard and a wonderful option, it's not always accessible or a great fit for everyone.
• Hybrid publishing. I know I'm going to upset some people, but I find it hard to make the argument for this option. I know some awesome hybrid publishers who are working to make things better but until then, I put it in last place.
• Self-publishing. This is a fantastic option when it's done well--and effectively. Therein lies the rub! It's easy to make amateur mistakes, the details can be overwhelming and frustrating, and (as we know) time is money. The longer it takes to figure out the process, the more time and money is lost, even as the blood pressure rises.
