Publisher Insider #98: Google SGE likely to cause disruption

In May 2023, Google opened its Search Labs section, offering searchers the opportunity to opt in and explore Google SGE results. With Google's ongoing investment in AI-driven search, the Authoritas study offers valuable insights into the potential challenges and opportunities.

A Study On Google SGE

According to a recent study conducted by Authoritas, findings indicate that Google's AI-driven Search Generative Experience (SGE) may pose challenges to brand visibility and organic search traffic. The study examined 2,900 keywords related to brands and products across 15 industry sectors.

On average, each SGE component featured around 10-11 links from approximately four different websites. To sustain visibility and traffic, brands might need to secure multiple links and mentions within these AI-generated results.

Additionally, the study revealed that expanding the SGE element leads to a significant drop of approximately 1,255 pixels for the #1 ranked organic result on the page. So despite aiming for page 1 visibility, brands could find themselves pushed to page 2 instead!

As SGE introduces new competitors into the mix, other websites could emerge within its listings. In fact, a significant 62% of SGE links originate from domains that are not part of the top 10 organic search results.?
