Publish a Better Book

Publish a Better Book

Thanks to Deanna Russo for the LinkedIn inspiration this morning. Y'all can see her session from Monday Morning Breakthroughs HERE. Oh, the golden nuggets of strategy she's dropping!

She reminded me of this newsletter feature and how to use it to help my LinkedIn audience.

I want to help you write and publish a better book.

Anyone (and I truly mean anyone) can publish on Amazon. Most can create a bestseller pretty easily. But not everyone is writing great books or creating a book that doesn't just get published but also changes lives, builds community, builds business, and changes the world.

Books are a legacy business. They are also a healing and self-development journey.

If you publish with a company that doesn't honor those two things, too bad for you.

Even if you're putting out your first 100-page signature teaching memoir - a book to use as your calling card for your new (or existing) business or to give away at speaking events, please don't skimp. Do it right. Write and publish something you'll be proud of and that leaves your legacy in the world.

In the world of Brave Healer Productions, this means being vulnerable and mastering the art of storytelling to show us the scenes from your life.

Please don't just try to tell me what to do. I need to know, like, and trust you first.

Your book, if done well, helps me get to know, like, and trust you by using personal stories that resonate with me and help me know YOU are the one I want to hire.

What I see in many business books today is:

  1. Poor writing.
  2. Little (or no) stories
  3. A lot of teachings
  4. Not enough vulnerability
  5. No editing

Sure, you can put your book out there, and you CAN do it inexpensively. But if this is going to represent you and your business, life, and legacy, it pays to invest in the help that will produce a book that:

  1. Creates raving fans
  2. Sparks praise
  3. Entertains as it inspires
  4. Moves people and makes them feel something
  5. Resonates with perfect clients
  6. Your children read and are proud of
  7. Changes lives
  8. Gets shared and recommended
  9. Helps people succeed
  10. Changes the world

One of my clients is writing a wonderful book right now that his kids and their kids will read someday and be so excited to own. I WISH my grandparents had written their stories down! Even in a journal! Oh, how I would love to read those pages today, to learn about where I came from and how those successful entrepreneurs battled the world they lived in to leave us that indomitable spirit they had.

And that's only one cool reason to write and publish your book. What if your book was the determining factor in someone hiring YOU over the 100 others in your field? That is what I want for you.

"You own everything that happened to you. Share your stories. If they wanted you to write warmly about them, they should've behaved better." Anne Lamott

Oh, how I love you Anne.

What stories have you been a little afraid to share? THOSE just might be the exact stories someone needs to hear to change their life. It's time to be brave.

And it's time to hire better editors who understand storytelling at the next level.

My last nugget for you is about editing.

There are three levels of editing: 1) Developmental editing, 2) Copy editing, and 3) Proofreading. Know what you're hiring your "editor" to do.

If you hire an editor and all they do is proofread, you may end up with a poorly-written book. Don't write a crappy book, y'all.

Write and publish a book that helps them know, love, trust, and hire you, and that leaves your legacy in the world in a badass way.

Come find me at the next Brave Healer Power Hour - it's a free 1-hour, 7-person networking event with a goal to make introductions that build your business. Come ask me any question you have about writing, publishing, or books! Grab a seat for that HERE.

And stay tuned for more Brave Healer Badassery!

"Please don't just try to tell me what to do. I need to know, like, and trust you first." So true... and it is more than ironic that so many experts think this means they should start every paragraph or sentence with "I"... ??
