A Publicist is Not a Salesperson

A Publicist is Not a Salesperson

First, before I get into the "meat" of this edition, I wanted to THANK all of you who have subscribed and those of you will find this newsletter. I planned on posting the second edition next week but I couldn't wait! Okay, so let's get into this topic of "A Publicist is Not a Salesperson"!

In the bustling business world that we live in, it's easy to confuse the roles of a publicist and a salesperson. Both are essential to your brand’s success and there ARE some similarities, but their functions are distinct and complementary. Understanding this difference can elevate your business strategy and boost your results as you will have clarity on these two roles.

The Core Difference

A salesperson's primary goal is to close deals and drive revenue. They focus on direct interactions with potential customers, convincing them to purchase your products or services. Sales are the lifeblood of your business, keeping the cash flow steady and the doors open.

A publicist, on the other hand, works behind the scenes to shape and amplify your brand’s image. Publicists craft compelling stories, build relationships with the media, and manage your public perception. Their goal isn't to sell directly but to create an environment where sales can flourish by making your brand more recognizable, trusted, and admired.

So, Why Do You Need a Publicist?

  1. Brand Awareness: A publicist gets your name out there. Through press releases, media coverage, and strategic placements, they make sure your brand is visible to the right audience.
  2. Credibility: When your business is featured in respected media outlets, it builds trust and credibility. People are more likely to buy from brands/people they know and trust.
  3. Storytelling: A great publicist knows how to tell your brand’s story in a way that resonates with your audience. They create narratives that capture attention and leave a lasting impression.
  4. Crisis Management: In times of trouble, a publicist can be your best ally. They manage the flow of information, control the narrative, and help mitigate damage to your brand’s reputation.

?? ?? ?? ?? Great article! Thank you for taking the time to write it. For us in the PR industry, this can be a challenge with clients who don't understand the difference. Early on in my career, I ran into this issue a lot. However, I took the time to explain to my clients the difference. Allbeit, some got it, and some did not. ??♀? #pr #prlife #publicists

Great read and I’m not ashamed to say I didn’t understand the difference before I just read this. I’m sure you can understand how it can be a tad bit confusing to someone who doesn’t quite specialize in this skill. Thank you and I hope to work with you all in the future to develop my brand through PR, AND NOT SALES!
