Publications of the week

As informed earlier this week, this newsletter will now focus more on highlights of some key publications released during the week. It will be a random mix of therapy areas. The links for all articles are provided, along with a brief summary of each. Hope you find it useful. You can subscribe to the newsletter to receive alerts whenever a new edition is published.

1. Should patients with #cardiovascular implantable electronic devices?(CIEDs) use wearable #smartdevices?

Wearable smart devices emit a small, imperceptible current of electricity which then flows through the body. Prolonged bioimpedance interference from these could cause serious adverse events in patients with CIEDs

2. #Dapagliflozin benefits consistent in #heartfailure for patients with and without #gout

This post hoc analysis of 2 trials found that #gout was common in patients with #heartfailure and associated with worse outcomes. The benefit of #dapagliflozin was consistent in patients with and without gout. #Dapagliflozin reduced the initiation of new treatments for hyperuricemia and gout

3. Phase 3 trial finds oral #empagliflozin provides safe #glycemic control in children with type 2 diabetes

In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial among 262 patients in 108 centres in 15 countries, participants with #type2diabetes (aged 10–17 years; HbA1c?6·5–10·5% [48–91 mmol/mol]) who had been previously treated with metformin or insulin were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to oral #empagliflozin 10 mg, oral #linagliptin 5 mg, or placebo. At 14 weeks, doses were changed or adjusted based on HbA1c levels. The primary outcome was change in #HbA1c?from baseline at 26 weeks.?#Empagliflozin provided clinically relevant placebo-corrected reductions in #HbA1c, and might offer a new treatment option for young people with type 2 diabetes.

4. Too little sodium can be harmful to heart failure patients

For people with heart failure, restricting dietary sodium intake to levels below the standard recommended maximum of about 2.3 grams per day does not bring additional benefits and may increase the risk of death. In the study, researchers analyzed nine randomized controlled trials that assessed different levels of sodium restriction for people with heart failure and included data on rates of death and hospitalization.

5. ?Beneficial effect of verapamil in children with newly-diagnosed type 1 diabetes

In this randomized clinical trial including 88 children and adolescents with newly diagnosed #type1diabetes, participants were randomly assigned 1:1 to once-daily oral #verapamil (n = 47) or placebo (n = 41). C-peptide levels (a measure of pancreatic beta cell function) measured during a mixed-meal tolerance test 52 weeks after diagnosis were 30% higher with #verapamil compared with placebo.

6. Comparison of Short-Term Versus Long-Term Antibiotic Therapy Among Severe Cases of Pneumonia: A Prospective Observational Study Among Children in India

In?#children?between 2 months and 5 years of age in?#India?with severe?#pneumonia, short-course parenteral?#antibiotics?therapy is equally effective as long-course therapy. The?early initiation of short-course intravenous?#antibiotic?treatment followed by a transition to oral antibiotic was found to be considerably less expensive and with comparable outcomes to conventional intravenous treatment for seven days.

7. Abstracts of Interest on Novel Therapies for Gastrointestinal Cancers

The ASCO Post?briefly highlights some studies of new treatments in gastrointestinal oncology from the 2023 ASCO GI Cancers Symposium.
