Publication Tracker - from submitted manuscript to published article
In a traditional (STM) publishing flow, a manuscript is submitted, then moves through the editorial and peer review process, commences into production, and via content distribution to content hosting where we eventually find the published article. Each step is taken sequentially. That also means the article (meta)data is changing while moving from the editorial system to the production system, into content hosting.
The transition to Open Access is adding even more complexity of multi-currency transactions as well introducing new actors like institutions and funders, who might also play a role in the financial settlement. A transaction is not a sequential workflow step. ?It runs on a more or less parallel track. It is initiated “somewhere” in between submission and acceptance and is completed after acceptance and (hopefully) before publication. This parallel track requires (meta)data exchange between a number of standalone systems, making it difficult to keep all metadata up-to-date in one place. As a result of that, new problems start to arise: where and how can we report on (meta)data across all systems?
Some examples:
Our solution: the Publication Tracker
We have developed an easy to use tool called the Publication Tracker – from submitted manuscript to published article. It provides a flexible (meta)data store that captures “events” from different systems like your editorial system, production and content distribution systems, as well as any financial or payment systems. Each event comes with metadata that will update the master record in the store. The Publication Tracker thus becomes an ultimate tool providing reporting capabilities across all your systems and workflows.

On top of that, being event driven has many additional benefits. An event-driven architecture enables?businesses to capture events?as they occur and process complex multi-step decisions in real time — maximizing application responsiveness and enabling publishers to ensure improved author experience and optimized workflows. It fits in well with the Workflow Solutions I described here. Each event might trigger a number of other workflows.
