Public Speaking Tip: Be Ready To Improv
I have the honor of serving as Chairman of the Board for Discovery Space, our local children's science museum. We held our annual dinner this past week and it was another successful year. We do it differently, and challenge our donors to an engineering challenge at each table - a welcome and fun diversion from the usual night of speeches.
When I met with our leadership, we decided that the agenda should focus on our recent move and other new developments from our Executive Director. I wasn't going to have a speaking role.
When I walked in that evening, I looked up at the stage and saw my name in big letters on the opening slide. The team greeted me and told me I needed to open the evening and kick things off. Nearly 200 people were milling about. A change of plans to be sure. No problem.
I had a few minutes (and a glass of wine) to organize my thoughts. A few key points, and up I went. As soon as I stood at the lectern, it all came naturally. How? The next time you find yourself unexpectedly up in front of a few hundred people, here's how to do it:
1. Stick to the basics. Don't try to get fancy. Focus on about 3 points.
2. Speak honestly and be genuine. You have passion for the topic - let it show. If you're honest with yourself, everyone else will see it.
3. Smile, breathe, and have fun! You wouldn't be up there unless someone wanted to hear what you had to say. Speak to them, and enjoy the experience.
4. Develop the habit of being aware of the big picture. Always know why you are doing what you do. Ask yourself: "In this moment, could I explain to the world why it is that what I'm doing is important?" If you have a good answer, then you are connected to your mission.
I highly recommend Toastmasters International for anyone wanting to improve their public speaking skills. Check them out and have some fun!
