There were about half a million eyes all looking at me and hoping I do not make a fool of myself in the end.
Well, I could only save myself by controlling my nerves and focusing on what mattered. This wasn’t my first speaking engagement but it was significant because it was my first global experience. I finally found a way to stay present and the result was rounds of applause and a job.
Public speaking is a valuable skill that can enhance your personal and professional life. It involves more than just speaking in front of an audience, it encompasses preparation, delivery, and the ability to engage and persuade listeners.
Before we get into all the tiny details, let's understand what Public speaking is
Public Speaking Public speaking is the act of delivering a speech or presentation to a live audience with the aim of informing, persuading, entertaining, or inspiring them.
It is a vital communication skill that involves conveying ideas and information clearly and effectively. Public speaking can occur in various settings, such as conferences, seminars, workshops, classrooms, business meetings, and social events, and to various audiences,
This audience can be formal as in a work setting, professional conferences or business meetings, or informal as in wedding toasts, parties, and friends gatherings.?
Whatever the setting might be, it is important to note that public speaking is essential in all aspects of our lives. The benefits of being a great speaker can not be overemphasized.?
When mastering the act of public speaking, it is important to:
1. Know your audience: What category of professionals does your career expose you to? Are you going to be speaking to C-suite Executives, entry-level professionals, or mid-level experts?
In understanding their demography it is necessary to pay attention to the interests and expectations of your audience. Also, tailor your speaking to their understanding level.
2. Define Your Purpose:
Every presentation has a purpose, determine the goal or aim of the speech, is it to inform, persuade, entertain, or inspire? Ensure that your presentation content aligns with the purpose?
3. Research Thoroughly:
Always come correct, the accuracy of the information you share, will be questioned at every time. People want to know you're not telling them scrap. Whether it is in a topic they are familiar with or not.
They would question every detail and if between the lines they find out that your facts aren’t right, it will destroy your credibility. Use statistics, examples, anecdotes, and quotes to support your points.
4. Structure and Practice your presentation repeatedly:?
The structure of a presentation usually has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The beginning of your presentation, which also doubles as the introduction, should capture attention with a hook. State your purpose and preview your main points.?
The middle or body is where you develop the main points with clear organization and the use of subpoints and transitions to maintain flow. You can also inculcate some aspects of storytelling.
End and summarize your key points by restating the significant aspects of your message.?
No matter how great your presentation scripts are, if you do not practice you will never own it. Practicing also entails using effective language that is clear and concise.
By all means, avoid overloading your presentation with technical jargon. Rehearse your speech multiple times, practice in front of a mirror, record yourself, or present to friends for feedback.
5. Overcoming Anxiety:
Anxiety is a normal part of every presentation. I can tell you for free that anxiety happens to the best of us. So do not freight when it happens. All you need to manage the thoughts in your head is to prepare thoroughly.
Confidence comes from being well-prepared and relaxed.? know your material and practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing,? visualization, or meditation before speaking.
Focusing on the message you’re trying to communicate, can change the overall experience. Train your mind to stay on the message.
