Not everyone is aware of the obvious
When public speaking is on your agenda, one key tip is – always build on your strength. Know your personality, strengths, and weaknesses. Focus on the things that you’re good at and stay away from those that you’re weak at. It’s stating the obvious, but sometimes, not everyone is aware of the obvious.
Build on your strengths
In public speaking, audiences engage with speakers who are personally invested and who are true to themselves. For example, if your personality lends itself more effectively to quiet strength, you may want to consider staying away from cracking jokes. However, if your personality is more outgoing, stay true to your personality and by all means, do crack that joke, but do make sure it’s all in good taste.
Capitalizing on your content expertise and being genuinely passionate about topics are both ways you can keep the audience engaged both during your speech and continued to keep their interest after the conversation as well.
Continuous work on improving the effectiveness of your message and your delivery in public speaking is paramount.
Practice before speaking in public
In public speaking, stepping out in front of a huge audience, even for someone who is a great public speaker, can be incredibly intimidating. Your first conference, major talk, or business pitch can be one of the scariest experiences of your life, and practicing your speech in front of co-workers, family, and friends can help you quickly hone your public speaking skills and transfer your learning to the presentation stage.
Taking the time to record your speech and body language can help you significantly improve your overall presentation, especially if you take the time to take notes on how you sound and how you look and make any needed improvements. Feedback from family and friends you present to can only take you so far so personal feedback from videos or from giving your speech in front of a mirror can make the difference between a joke or point that falls flat, and one that gets a rousing applause from a jaded audience.
Consider voice training or joining your local Toastmasters
What’s voice training?
Surprisingly enough, even though many people may lack confidence in their public speaking voice, they may not have considered some of the steps available to them to improve that skill set.
Just as singers and dancers continually train their voice and body to do their job, people who engage in public speaking can train their voice to be the best in their profession. If you don’t feel like you’re moving people emotionally, controlling the way others perceive you, or you can’t predetermine the outcome of conversations, to make sure things turn out the way you want, voice training for public speaking may be what you need.
What do professional voice trainers do?
Professional voice trainers can help you become an incredible speaker, communicator, and influencer. Improve your professional success and satisfaction in life by simply improving your ability to communicate.
A very small percentage of the way you’re perceived by others is actually influenced by the words that you choose – around 7%.
The way you say the words including your tonality, and your body language can make a huge difference in the way you are perceived by your audience.
Feeling uptight? Tense muscles can communicate to the audience that you’re unsure of your topic or concerned. Practicing with a voice coach can give you valuable feedback on your style and also allow you to observe a variety of different styles.
