Finland’s TSO Pinpoints Five Offshore Wind Connection Areas

Finland’s transmission system operator (TSO) Fingrid Oyj has identified five preliminary areas along the country’s west coast where offshore wind farms could be connected to the mainland grid by the 2030s. Now, the TSO is seeking feedback from stakeholders on defining the connection points more precisely.

Maryland Governor Enacts Bill that Enables State to Re-Allocate ?rsted’s Skipjack ORECs to US Wind

Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed a new offshore wind bill on 9 May, under which the State will create a schedule for offshore wind solicitations until 2031 and revise previous solicitations. The latter will allow the State to re-allocate the support awarded to ?rsted’s Skipjack project – from whose power purchase agreement the developer withdrew – to other eligible offshore wind projects.

Denmark Unveils Plan for Up to 3.8 GW Bornholm Energy Island

The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) has revealed its Plan for Program Bornholm Energy Island, outlining the framework for the future energy island at Bornholm and the adjacent coastal areas. The project is planned to consist of an offshore wind farm south of Bornholm with a 3.8 GW capacity as well as high-voltage installations on Bornholm and Zealand.

The plan sets the overall framework for future construction projects for Bornholm Energy Island, taking into consideration the environmental issues and planning restrictions in the area, such as bird protection areas, defence areas, and ship traffic routes, DEA said.

ORE Catapult Secures GBP 86 Million for Wind Turbine R&D Facility Overhaul

The Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult has secured nearly GBP 86 million (approximately EUR 99.9 million) capital funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), a UK Government body directing research and innovation funding, to enhance its wind turbine blade and drive train testing facilities in Blyth, Northumberland.

US Selects Five Floating Wind Technologies Enabling Mass Production and Deployment in Second FLOWIN Phase

Principle Power’s WindFloat, PelaStar, Technip Energies’ INO15, Stiesdal’s Tetra Triple-One, and Esteyco’s WHEEL floating wind platforms are the winners of the second phase of the FLoating Offshore Wind ReadINess (FLOWIN) Prize in the United States, set up to support technologies that can facilitate mass production and deployment of floating wind turbines.

The FLOWIN Prize was established in 2022 by DOE’s Wind Energy Technologies Office, with a total cash pool of USD 5.85 million, plus up to USD 1.175 million in vouchers for technical support from DOE national laboratories. The prize is administered by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) with support from the Oceantic Network.

France Names Winner of Country’s First Large-Scale Floating Offshore Wind Tender

A consortium between Belgium-based Elicio and BayWa r.e. has won the AO5 tender in France to develop and operate the country’s first floating offshore wind farm, the 250 MW Pennavel project, off the south coast of Brittany.

The tender brought together ten candidates pre-selected by the Commission for Regulation of Energy (CRE). The BayWa r.e. and Elicio consortium, which offered EUR 86.45 per MWh, was selected following the examination of all projects by the CRE.

The 250 MW Pennavel will be the first commercial floating offshore wind farm in the world to be awarded a long-term Contract for Difference (CfD), according to the consortium.

New York Gives Final Go-Ahead for Empire Wind 1 Construction to Commence

Equinor has received final approval from the New York State Public Service Commission to begin construction on its 810 MW Empire Wind 1 offshore wind farm.

The Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN), issued on 16 May, authorises the construction and operation of transmission facilities for the delivery of electricity from the Empire Wind 1 offshore wind farm into the New York grid.

“It is critical that construction begin in early May for the developer to keep the construction schedule on track and achieve the anticipated commercial operation date,” New York State Public Service Commission Chair Rory M. Christian said.
