A Public Health Injustice

Do you know that doctors now recommend nutrition counseling (medical nutrition therapy) as an essential service in the fight against chronic disease? Yet, an alarming injustice is unfolding before our eyes—one that disproportionately affects our socioeconomically disadvantaged communities.
The World Health Organization has long stated that proper nutrition is key to preventing most chronic conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease. Despite this undeniable fact, hundreds of patients—many of whom rely on Medicaid or Medicare—are being systematically denied access to life-saving nutrition counseling. Since September 2024, Kelly’s Choice Nutrition Company has been forced to turn away 226 patients referred by medical professionals. These individuals, suffering from critical nutrition-related conditions, have been left stranded without the care they urgently need.
This is not merely an oversight; it is an injustice. When insurance providers refuse to cover Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), they effectively jeopardize the health and lives of the most vulnerable members of our society. The result? A cascade of preventable hospitalizations, escalating healthcare costs, and, tragically, lost lives.
Fortunately, there is a legislative beacon of hope. In December 2023, Representatives McGovern and Rutherford spearheaded the introduction of the Medical Nutrition Equity Act into the House of Representatives as H.R. 6892. This Act seeks to eliminate the financial and systemic barriers that currently deny equitable access to Medical Nutrition Therapy. By ensuring comprehensive coverage for nutrition counseling, the Act would mark a monumental step forward in preventing chronic disease and promoting healthcare equity.
This is a critical moment for our society to demand accountability from those who have allowed this inequity to persist. We must call on insurance companies, policymakers, and government officials to recognize that access to nutrition counseling is not a luxury—it is a necessity for the health and well-being of our communities.
How You Can Take Action:
Dear [Representative’s Name],
I am writing to urge you to support the Medical Nutrition Equity Act (H.R. 6892), introduced by Representatives McGovern and Rutherford. This vital legislation would ensure that all Americans, especially those insured by Medicaid or Medicare, have access to life-saving Medical Nutrition Therapy. The evidence is clear—proper nutrition counseling is essential for preventing chronic diseases and reducing long-term healthcare costs. It is unacceptable that our most vulnerable citizens are being denied this critical care. I respectfully ask you to champion this Act and work towards a more equitable healthcare system.
Sincerely, [Your Name]

The time to act is now. Our community’s health—and the future of our healthcare system—depends on ensuring that no one is denied access to the critical nutrition counseling they need to thrive.
