PTV Mobility News - January 2025
TomTom’s 14th annual Traffic Index shines a light on just how much our commutes are slowing us down. The Traffic Index uses TomTom’s analytical traffic products to build a picture of how vehicles move across our cities.
Top 10 slowest cities in the world based on travel time
1. Barranquilla, Colombia
2. Kolkata, India
3. Bengaluru, India
4. Pune, India
5. London, UK
6. Kyoto, Japan
7. Lima, Peru
8. Davao City, Philippines
9. Trujillo, Peru
10. Dublin, Ireland
This year’s report, dives deep into the traffic patterns of more than 500 cities across six continents in 2024. By calculating average travel times per kilometre from the millions driven across urban centres and surrounding areas, TomTom uncovers the stark reality: congestion continues to rise.
The TomTom Traffic Index is more than just an insightful report, it can give cities the momentum to act. In order to improve traffic, it is important to understand such data and use it in a targeted manner. Digital tools and planning systems based on AI and intelligent algorithms can help here. In this way, cities can not only proactively manage traffic in the short term and reduce delays, but also plan for the medium and long term and improve mobility services.

Econolite Wins Traffic Signal Improvements for Highway Safety Improvement Program Contract
A suburb of the City of Los Angeles , the city of Bell (City) is an incorporated city in Los Angeles County, California, occupying only 2.5 square miles. Located on the west bank of the Los Angeles River, the City sees urban level traffic congestion as a result of commuter traffic traveling from and into Los Angeles. Due to the City’s geographic location, the City endures inordinately high volumes of vehicle traffic for a city of its size. In 2020, the City started a Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) Program that included updating its street and intersection infrastructure to improve highway efficiencies and safety. Part of its Resolution 2024-38, the City approved funds for a Street Improvement Project. The project included participating in the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).
Just before the Holidays, Econolite was awarded a contract to provide Traffic Signal Improvements for 28 signalized intersections throughout the City. The project includes removing existing traffic signal hardware and upgrading more than 300 vehicle signal heads and signal backplates, as well as installing nearly 200 new pedestrian countdown signal heads and mountings and 160 Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) push button systems.
The project is designed to upgrade the City’s traffic signal system, improve vehicle and pedestrian safety, as well as increase operational efficiencies. Econolite will work with the City’s Engineering Department, which is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and operation of City-owned improvement projects, including its public streets and traffic signal systems. Econolite is scheduled to complete the project in early 2025.
The City of Winnipeg is leveraging the cloud-based tool PTV Lines, to spearhead the transformative redesign of its bus network. With Winnipeg's population projected to reach 1 million by 2047, the city is preparing to meet the challenges of rapid growth and geographic expansion.
To keep pace, Winnipeg is re-imagining its transit system to enhance efficiency and reduce congestion. Local transit operator Winnipeg Transit is utilizing PTV Lines to evaluate accessibility, refine routes, and optimize timetables for a smarter, more connected future.
