PTV Mobility News – April 2024

Welcome to the era of spatial traffic modeling and management ?? | April's Fool

For April Fool's, we unleashed our imagination with ? Umovity Vision Flow ?, a groundbreaking sticker designed to transform any pair of glasses ?? into a limitless canvas for enhancing city traffic flow within a virtual realm.

In order to make the prank more authentic, we even built a website to explain Umovity Vision Flow in detail: Umovity Vision Flow

But amidst the laughter, could there be a hint of reality in our jest? We sat down with our CEO, Christian U. Haas , and our CTO, Mogens Abel-Bache , to discuss the genuine potential of Extended Reality in transportation planning, and Umovity’s view on it. Dive deeper into the conversation on our blog.

How accessible are business parks by public transport?

Our co-worker Chris Papaioannou came up with a short analysis on the accessibility of brownfield sites across the West Midlands, UK, following the release of £200 million in funding by The West Midlands Combined Authority. One notable site under development is the former West Works site in Longbridge. In addition to housing, it will feature a new business park ?? ?? that has already attracted interest from high-tech industrial ???? and pharmaceutical ?? tenants.

Using PTV Lines, the cloud-based public transport software for line planning and public transport service optimization, Chris Papaioannou examined how the accessibility of this site compares to other business parks in the region, particularly focusing on public transport accessibility for working professionals. ( ? By the way, he's planning on creating more short public transport investigations like this, so if you happen to have a specific case that you'd be keen for him to investigate, let us know in the comments. ?)

Focusing on Digital Twin and Predictive Technologies at the ITS America Annual Conference & Exposition

Exhibiting under the unified brand of Umovity, the convergence of technologies between Econolite and PTV Group will be a strong focus at the 2024 ITS America Annual Conference & Exposition being held April 23-25 at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, AZ. Of particular importance will be the ongoing software integration developments designed to provide cutting-ege, data-driven and predictive capabilities that will deliver groundbreaking levels of dynamic traffic management and mobility.

During the Conference & Exposition, Econolite and PTV experts will highlight the integration work between Centracs Mobility with the newly launched PTV Flows that offers a cloud-based predictive traffic management solution. The integration leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) to forecast traffic and travel times for an entire road network up to one hour in advance. The application combines the largest and most detailed historical traffic database and PTV’s industry-leading forecast modeling with the power of Centracs ATMS (Advanced Traffic Management System), the industry’s leading ATMS.

In addition, significant transportation industry coverage is scheduled, including a feature article, Digital Twin Strategy for Optimization and Predictive Traffic Signal Operations, co-authored by Econolite’s Snehasis "Sunny" Chakravarty and PTV Group’s Lorenzo Meschini in ITS International magazine’s March/April edition. Umovity is featured in the ITS International’s ITS America Show Preview, and will be in the ITS America Show Daily. Be sure to visit the ITS International website for the event coverage.

On Thursday, April 25, Econolite’s Dustin DeVoe and PTV Group’s Chiara Cianella will deliver presentations on digital twin strategies for mobility during the TS2: Advancements in Transportation Systems Operation session. Mr. DeVoe will present on Digital Twin Technology to Dynamically Optimize Traffic Signal Operations, and Ms. Cianella will present on Cloud-Based Digital Twin for Public Transport Operational Decision Support. The session is located in the 106B West Building from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM.

Making transport planning tangible for politicians and the public - Kassel, Germany - a real life example

Public participation in municipal transport planning projects is a necessary but often challenging undertaking. People find it difficult to evaluate planning options based solely on project plans and technical drawings. This is where realistic 3D simulations come into play.

The German city of Kassel has a high-quality digital 3D city model. This model has been developed in recent years by the city’s Department of Surveying and Geoinformation and is kept up to date using the CityGRID software from UVM Systems. The road traffic and civil engineering department wanted to use this city model for the visualization of traffic planning projects.
