Are you aiming for Canadian economic migration or citizenship? Then, demonstrating your English language skills becomes crucial. Enter the PTE Core, a relatively new yet rapidly gaining traction English proficiency test designed specifically for your needs. So, what has changed from PTE to PTE Core?

This blog delves into the latest updates, PTE Core test format, and valuable PTE Core tips to help you conquer the exam and achieve your Canadian dream.

What is the latest information about PTE Core?

  • February 12th, 2024, marks the official launch! You can now book your PTE Core test at authorized centers across Canada.

PTE Core Test Format Breakdown

The PTE Core test format has two-hour, computer-based tasks assessing your core English skills:

  • Speaking & Writing: This combined section involves tasks like describing an image, summarizing written text, and responding to short questions.

  • Reading: Expect to read various passages and answer multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions.
  • Listening: You'll listen to audio recordings like lectures, conversations, and news reports, followed by answering comprehension questions.

What has changed in PTE Core?

PTE Core is valid for Canada Immigration and just like CELPIP and IELTS General, the questions seem to be a bit liberal (easy?). The sample answers for Speaking tasks seem to have focused more on content and not fluency which was not the case in PTE Academic. Here I am listing the changes I observed from the sample tests and my experience with PTE Core:

  • Focus more on content quality. Irrelevant content won't help now.
  • Respond to a Situation asks for a practical approach; so, focus more on providing a pragmatic solution rather than speaking fluently and off the topic. It is also essential to identify the tone of the response - whom you are talking to - formal or informal talk?
  • Read Aloud has become a bit stricter as you need to stretch the keywords (nouns?). Intonation is important.
  • Repeat Sentence asks for copying the intonation of the speaker. Don't copy the accent though.
  • Email Writing should be crisp. Take care of the tone/language here. Whom are you writing? Formal or informal? Quite similar to CELPIP.
  • There are options for Select a Missing Word.

  • Word limits have changed: Summarize Spoken Text: 20-30 words; Summarize Written Text: 25-50 words; and, E-Mail: up to 100 words.

Thanks for the insightful update on the PTE Core, particularly for those aiming to migrate to Canada or attain citizenship. It's great to see how the test is tailored to meet specific immigration requirements and focuses more on practical language use in real-life scenarios. The emphasis on content quality over fluency in the speaking tasks and the pragmatic approach required in the "Respond to a Situation" task are particularly interesting changes. These adjustments seem to align well with everyday communication needs in professional and personal settings, which is crucial for those looking to integrate into Canadian society. Reet Brij, this detailed breakdown makes the PTE Core much less daunting and emphasizes strategic preparation. It's great to see such a resourceful approach to helping candidates succeed.
