Plant tissue culture is a collection of techniques used to grow or maintain plant cells, tissues, or organs in sterile conditions. It's also known as micropropagation, which is a method used to produce plant clones.
Meron
Some types of plant tissue culture include:
Seed culture, Embryo culture, Callus culture, Organ culture, Protoplast culture, Anther culture.
Here's some more information about some of these types:
Callus culture
This is the culture of dedifferentiated plant cells that are induced on media. A callus is a mass of irregular, undifferentiated cells that have the ability to divide and differentiate to form an entire organism.
Protoplast culture
This uses naked plant cells, or plant cells without a cell wall. In tissue culture labs, it's used to regenerate a whole plant.
Embryo culture
This is the culture of isolated immature or mature embryos. In embryo culture, the plant develops directly from the embryo or indirectly through the formation of callus and then subsequent formation of shoots and roots.
Micropropagation increases the amount of planting material to facilitate distribution and large scale planting. In this way, thousands of copies of a plant can be produced in a short time.
