PT Cameras Explained

What are pan and tilt camera heads in sewer cameras?

Why are they used, and what are several kinds that are available on the market?

First things first:

What are Pan and Tilt Camera Heads?

The pan and tilt camera head(see here) is a rotatable mechanized camera head mounted on a push or drop cable of an inspection camera. It is as simple as that; it is a different way of pipe inspection apart from the straight-view camera units.

The PT camera head has motors inside the camera head to rotate that camera on the axis. Some of them have a manual focus function that allows the operator to pair the two functions together: turn the camera head to the desired object and focus on it for a precise picture.

Secondly:

Why are Pan and Tilt Camera Heads Used?

The question is: why are the pan and tilt camera heads used? The PT camera heads are for sure much more pricey to buy and the replacement parts are more to replace. The main advantage of the PT camera is its wide viewing range, which is made possible by the rotating parts that turn the camera sideways and up and down.

This ability to turn allows the camera head to inspect the sidewalls and, in some cases, side laterals with greater precision than any straight-view camera head. Some PT (see example) camera heads are equipped with manual zoom that delivers an even better and more precise picture, thus aiding the operator to delve deeper into the issue.

Generally speaking, for most applications, the straight-view camera head is the better option in terms of cost and application. If you are not sure which camera head to look for, get in touch with me, and we can talk it through.

And at last:

What several types of Pan and Tilt Cameras are available on the market?

There is a wide range of pan and tilt cameras available, and most of them are Chinese manufactured since China has a big part of the visual inspection market and can manufacture faster and in more quantities than other manufacturers in different countries.

There is basically one style of pan and tilt camera and some other styles that deviate from it. The camera is situated on a moving part that is connected to two arms that can also move around on the axial.

Different styles of pan and tilt camera heads are available, like the picture with a TROGLOPROBE PT Camera Head. Still, mostly, they all follow the style of the picture above with one axial part pinned between two parts, which in turn turns on another axial.

Overview:

The pan and tilt camera units are more advanced than the straight-view units and are made to see more in the pipe by using the rotating function. They cost more and are more to keep them running however, they enable the operator to see much more in the pipe, focus specifically on the object desired and delve deeper into the issue with more accuracy.
