Understanding and enhancing the learning experience
?
In the digital age, online education has transformed the way we learn. With the advent of online courses, learners have the flexibility to acquire knowledge and skills at their own pace, often without the constraints of traditional classroom settings.
However, while online courses offer numerous advantages, they also come with unique psychological challenges that educators and course designers must address to ensure an effective and engaging learning experience for the course takers. In the last few months, I have dug deep into the psychology of online courses, exploring the cognitive, emotional, and motivational factors that influence online learning, and finding out what factors provides psychological benefits to the online course enrollers.
If you are an online course creator or are planning to create your first online course, this article is a must read. We will also provide practical strategies for enhancing the online learning environment, which will reap great results for you, just like your online students. So lets get started with the Cognitive Psychology of online learning first…
?
Cognitive Psychology of Online Learning
Cognitive psychology focuses on how individuals acquire, store, process, and use information. In the context of online courses, understanding cognitive processes is crucial for designing effective course content.
The thoughts related to these concepts can be conscious or nonconscious – we might consciously try to focus our attention on a lecture for example, but the light flickering in the room could trigger a nonconscious shift elsewhere. Likewise there are countless examples that creates distractions around your online students and you being their course instructor have to ensure that their mind stays more focused on the content of your course, rather on what’s happening around him/her.
?
1)?????? Attention Span and Multitasking – Online learners get distracted mostly by the electronic gadgets he/she has while learning. E-mails, notification, Social Media and other internet temptation on smart phones and laptops make the learner lose focus on the learnings of the online course. As an online tutor, it is your responsibility to have content designed in a way that the viewer is less interested in these distracting temptations and focus mainly on the learning.
?Techniques like interactive quizzes, engaging visuals, short result-oriented videos, case studies, practical exercises, etc. can help a lot in maintaining the required focus during online learning. Always try to have at least one learning or 1 exercise for each video. In my opinion this helps a lot.
?
2)?????? Memory and information retention – Being an online trainer you must consider the limitation of human memory and retention. Memory is a crucial component of the learning process. For learners to apply and build upon the knowledge and skills presented in online courses, they must retain the information effectively. However, memory has its limitations, and if not addressed, these limitations can hinder the long-term retention of course content.
Tools like Cheat sheets and creating mind-map helps learners retains all the important points/messages of any topic. Online trainers use these tools for enabling learner retain maximum possible information from their online course. Similarly, if your online course is of long duration, every section must contain a “Section Summary” video along with a worksheet in which you encourage learners to write down (1) What they have learnt in the section, and (2) How they will use this learning to improve the area in their life to which your online course relates to. These are some great tools that can help learners retain maximum information and learnings from your online course.
?
3)?????? Cognitive load - Cognitive load refers to the mental effort required by an individual to process and understand information. In the context of online courses, it's crucial to manage cognitive load effectively to optimize the learning experience.
Courses should aim to minimize extraneous cognitive load by presenting information in a clear and organized manner. Break down course content into smaller, manageable chunks. Present one concept or idea at a time: “1 Message per video” is a great methodology for online learning. This reduces cognitive load as learners can focus on understanding one thing before moving on to the next, and ease up their learning journey. Similarly, having have a user friendly navigation system for your course, If you are using some external platforms, then make sure that their user interfaces augments learning, and not makes difficult for learners to navigate your course.

Emotional aspect of Online Learning
Emotions play a significant role in the learning process. Online learners may experience a range of emotions, from frustration to motivation, which can impact their learning outcomes. And how the learner feels emotionally, depends significantly on how the online course of designed. In every online course you make, you must ensure that the learner is emotionally connected with the course and its content. Here’s few ways how you can do it.
?
1)?????? Augmenting Self-motivation – Online learners are normally self-motivated to learn. But if they purchase a self-paced course, that they can complete at their own pace, it is your responsibility that your content must motivate them to study the complete course. In online course, the course completion % is normally very low but if the course is very engaging and motivating learners to, say, view the next video or complete an exercise, etc. they wil probably move forward with the course and complete it.
?
As a content writer, consider incorporating motivational elements into your course materials, such as setting clear goals, providing regular feedback, and offering rewards for achievements.

2)?????? Isolation and Loneliness: Online learners may feel isolated, missing out on the social interactions of a traditional classroom. In a traditional classroom, students have the opportunity to engage in face-to-face discussions, form study groups, and build a sense of companionship with their peers. However, in the virtual realm of online learning, these valuable interpersonal connections can be elusive.
?
One effective strategy to combat the isolation experienced by online learners is to encourage and facilitate interaction. Discussion forums provide a platform for learners to engage in meaningful discourse, share insights, ask questions, and provide feedback to their fellow learners. These forums serve as virtual meeting places where students can connect, exchange ideas, and develop a sense of belonging within the online course community. Even a Facebook group for the students of your online course can be impactful. It has been adopted by countless online trainers.
?
3)?????? Frustration and Technical issues - When learners encounter technical glitches or grapple with complex course content, their frustration can mount, potentially impeding their overall learning experience. To ensure a smoother and more enjoyable learning journey, it is paramount for course designers and educators to address these issues proactively.
?
Technical glitches are not uncommon in the digital landscape, and they can range from login difficulties and website errors to video playback issues. When learners encounter such roadblocks, their frustration can be palpable. To mitigate this frustration, online courses should provide clear and readily accessible technical support. This support can take the form of comprehensive FAQs, troubleshooting guides, and responsive helpdesk services.
