The Psychology of Motivation

Motivation is a powerful force that drives us to achieve our goals and desire. It is the force that propels people towards success and accomplishment. The psychology of motivation has been studied extensively by psychologists, who have identified various theories to explain how motivation works.

One of the most popular theories of motivation is Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which suggests that human beings have five basic needs: physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. According to this theory, people are motivated by fulfilling these needs in a hierarchical order.

Two Types of Motivation

There are two types of motivation; intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

  1. Intrinsic Motivation: Intrinsic motivation is the internal drive to engage in an activity. It is driven by personal satisfaction, meaning, purpose, passion, enjoyment, fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment. This type of motivation is often seen in persons who are passionate about their work or hobbies. Intrinsic?motivation?is?more about personal growth, a sense of duty, and the recognition of purpose.
  2. Extrinsic Motivation: Extrinsic motivation is driven by external factors such as reward or punishment. This type of motivation arises when individuals engage in an activity to gain some form of external benefit or avoid negative consequences. These external factors include money, promotion, recognition, praise, status, gift, rewards etc.

Both types of motivation have their advantages and disadvantages. Intrinsic motivation tends to lead to more sustained engagement in activities as it comes from within oneself. However, extrinsic motivation can be useful in situations where there are clear external incentives or consequences.
