BRIEF ABOUT PSYCHOLOGY

Psychology is a scientific study of the mind and behavior. Psychologists are actively involved in studying and understanding mental processes, brain functions, and behavior. Psychology is a course which helps human beings, understands their problems, their behavior and why they behave in that manner. It is a course which understands the emotional, behavioral aspect of a person. Psychology is a course which is still trying to fight for its existenceas a Sciencein this society.

It is rising to prominence slowly and might get to its top within the next few years. Mental awareness has increased and so has the careers in psychology. Psychology is a field that will always see tremendous growth because it helps to understand what causes problems in people in the first place, not just in solving them.

?ABOUT WORKSHOP ON CAREER IN PSYCHOLOGY

The psychology department of Patna women’s college organized a workshop on “career options in psychology with special reference to clinical psychology”. The speaker for this workshop was a key resource person Pranay Kumar Gupta, from the psychology department of Pataliputra University.

?He enumerated various career options like teaching, undertaking research and counseling in different branches of psychology, including child psychology, neuropsychology, organizational psychology, sports psychology and so on. He focused more on clinical psychology as one should possess theoretical and practical knowledge to apply as clinical psychologist. He mentioned that students with clinical psychology background should be good in their critical thinking skills and have the ability to quickly identify a better treatment plan which will benefit the client.

He said that there is variety of career opportunities for clinical psychologists. These include substance (drug) abuse counselors, human resource positions, family or marriage counselors, forensic psychologists, child psychologists and learning disabilities specialists.

CAREERS IN PSYCHOLOGY

There are also lots of career paths in psychology beyond some of the typical options of clinical psychology or counseling psychology. Some of the most interesting jobs might be those that you don’t hear much about such as aviation psychology or traffic psychology.

One exercise you may find helpful is to look through a list of psychology careers to see what your options are and then narrow down the list to those in which you are most interested in. Obviously, the best job is the one that you truly love.

Psychology job in Therapy and Research are: Art therapy, clinical psychologist, counselor, Geropsychologist, experimental psychologist.

Psychology jobs in Applied psychology are: consumer psychologist, forensic or criminal psychologist, engineering psychologist, sports psychologist, traffic psychologist.

Psychology jobs in Workplace are: career counselor, aviation psychologist, industrial-organizational psychologist.

Psychology jobs in Education are: school psychologist, special education teacher.

There are many more job options in psychology as it is so diverse. Some of them require bachelor’s degree and others require masters and doctorate degree. Spend some of your tie researching more about what is required to apply for that particular field or job. Ask yourself if you have that commitment and interest to pursue this job. Finding a right career in psychology takes careful planning it is important to start thinking about what you might want to do early on so that you can start planning your educational map in order to achieve your vocational goals.
