Psychodrama for Recovery Coach Trainers
Thrilled to have participated in the weekend's "Motivational Interviewing in Action" at Hudson Valley Psychodrama Institute and to (finally!) step onto the famed Moreno Stage, twenty years later. All the while earning New York Certification Board continuing education credits (a first!).
As a trainer, I've incorporated experiential methods into my practice for decades - huge thanks to Liz Harper MSc ! - and I'm an enormous fan of Tian Dayton, MA, PhD, TEP sociometry work (https://www.tiandayton.com/). As a sceptic, however, I wondered how the Stages of Change model might be illustrated psychodramatically.
Mega congrats to Jennifer Salimbene and Regina Sewell for their creativity. In one exercise alone, these gifted directors moved embodied "Pre-Contemplation" into "Contemplation" through role training and doubling only. Leveraging an "attraction-not-promotion" interaction with embodied "Maintenance," they arrived at that very change talk that MINTs train us to elict - looking at you, our participating colleague, Sandra Rivers . Pure psychodrama, getting to the dynamic point, not lost in the endless plot.
An invaluable experience, highly recommended!
