From January 14, 2025, the clock started ticking. The PsychedeliCare European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) has 12 months to secure one million signatures, calling on the European Commission to take action on psychedelic-assisted therapies. The campaign seeks to standardize care, boost research, and reschedule psychedelics for medical use across the European Union.
What is the ECI? Introduced by the Treaty of Lisbon, the European Citizens’ Initiative is a tool of participatory democracy that enables EU citizens to propose changes to EU law by gathering widespread support. Since its inception in 2012, it has been used to address topics like healthcare, digital rights, and climate action. Now, for the first time, it will be harnessed to advocate for psychedelic-assisted therapies.
The PsychedeliCare Campaign’s Key Requests:
Why Now? The EU has only approved one new psychiatric treatment in the past three years, compared to 68 in oncology. Meanwhile, the mental health crisis continues to escalate, with millions across Europe facing treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and anxiety disorders. PsychedeliCare seeks to provide innovative solutions to bridge this gap.
The People Behind the Movement: Led by Théo Giubilei, a political science graduate and policy expert, PsychedeliCare is a coalition of scientists, therapists, policy advocates, and activists across 16 European nations. Their grassroots approach highlights the importance of public engagement to overcome stigma and push for reform.
Launch Event: The initiative will be officially introduced at the European Parliament in Brussels on?February 6, 2025, hosted by MEP Tilly Metz. The event will feature patient testimonials, research presentations, and discussions with policymakers. A live stream will be available for virtual attendees.?Register Here
