Can you spot AI writing?
We’re always talking about how convincing criminals can be when they’re trying to scam data or money. And now, with the advance in AI tools, they have a whole new level of conviction at their fingertips.
From writing tools like ChatGPT – the latest version of which can now write content from looking at a photograph – to deepfake videos, the technology exists for hackers to get ever more creative.
Does that mean new risks for you? Find out in our latest blog,?Is 2023 the year of deepfake cybercrime? Which may, or may not, have been written by an AI tool…
Hackers hone in on SVB opportunity.
It’s been hard to miss the news about Silicon Valley Bank, which collapsed earlier in March, leaving its customers – often start-ups and growing businesses – stranded.
But of course, this is a great opportunity for cyber criminals who are already targeting those businesses and other creditors. They’ve set up a number of false domains, and are advertising schemes that look like support for SVB customers, when in fact they’re just designed to scam companies already struggling.
You can?read more about this here?– and don’t forget that scammers are incredibly quick to jump on the latest bandwagon if they think they can exploit it.
Make it your business
We all know about protecting our businesses from cyber attack. But what about the danger posed by the businesses you come into contact with? An article in Forbes in late 2023 identified the potential risks associated to your supply chain.

Here are some FACTS to be aware of:
As the?Forbes article?says:
"For people, awareness is no longer enough. Members of staff, especially the senior executives, now need cyber training. The difference between cyber training and awareness is that the awareness session leaves you in the state of simply knowing something through observation from the presenter. Training involves more intensively learning processes and methods to deal with various situations. Think about a major fire incident in the office: The "aware" employee knows where the fire extinguisher is, but the "trained" employee actually knows how to use it to put out the fire."

Panel discussion at PrivSec London 2023
We were delighted to be part of a panel discussion at PrivSec London 2023 – a two-day conference for data protection, privacy, security professionals.
Mark discussed? The Future of Cybersecurity: Emerging Threats and Innovative Defence?with fellow panel members Alison Wakefield, Professor of Criminology and a previous chair of the UK’s Security Institute and Alex Yong, developer and co-founder at NextDLP, Chris Culligan of cyber insurance brokers GAWS and information security consultant Tim Burnett.
Some time was spent on AI, and the recent emergence of easily accessible AI applications like ChatGPT.?The point was made that, whilst these applications are by no means perfect they do make life easier for people. But they are also of benefit to cyber criminals, who are likely to use these tools to help them develop malicious code quicker or generate more interesting and convincing phishing emails, for example. AI is likely to be as much of benefit to malicious actors as it is for everyone else. What it does mean is that cyber security awareness and training will become increasingly important, as phishing or social engineering techniques become ever more sophisticated.
