PSSW (Personal Safety & Security Workshop) Programme - 2017

PSSW (Personal Safety & Security Workshop) Programme - 2017

On Friday 24th November 2017 I finished delivering the last PSSW event of 2017. So far, this year Trident Manor has delivered the programme in the UK and Africa to over 200 delegates/attendees. These delegates include doctors, nurses, prison workers, administrative staff, teachers, NGO staff, offender management personnel and other front-line workers; as well as members of senior management teams.

The primary connection between the delegates is that they are involved in lone working, working and interacting with vulnerable children or adults, or dealing with individuals and groups suffering from mental illnesses of dependencies.  In many cases the delegates were regularly placed in situations that increased the risk to their (or their colleagues) personal safety and security. With genuine concerns over the risk of physical or verbal assault and the added complications of increased mental pressure and trauma.

I am proud of the programme that has been developed to give delegates an increased knowledge about the risks that exist and how through proactive situational awareness steps can be taken to identify potential conflict or violence indicators. By helping delegates understand these factors steps can be taken to use proactive risk avoidance and de-escalation tactics and methods; using the principals of distraction, disruption, creating space and removal.

I was asked by one organisation whether Trident Manor delivers 'Conflict Managment' training; I said that we concentrated on 'Conflict Avoidance' because if you are having to manage the conflict, opportunities to remove and de-escalate the situation have been missed. We are now into our second year of engagement with that client who has rolled the programme out to the whole public facing workforce.

It is especially rewarding knowing that you are helping delegates involved in roles that often go unnoticed by the majority of the public but without whom individuals would not receive the help and assistance needed to recover, or avoid committing crime.

In 2018 the PSSW programme will be scheduled into our training programme and held at our offices in the UK. We will still deliver it to clients in the workplace, but the feedback is such that we want to ensure that the widest audience is able to learn and understand how to take proactive steps in self-protection; without becoming a ninja!

If you are involved in the medical, educational, offender management sectors; NGO's, charity outreach work or just want to understand sensible, effective ways of helping to reduce the risks you face from violence, intimidation or conflict please feel free to drop us a line at [email protected] for further information.
