PSI Conference 2020 – Ethical Issues in Data-Driven Decision Making
Paul Terrill
Experienced statistician with extensive statistical design and analysis skills
We have what promises to be a very interesting and slightly different session planned on the last day of the 2020 PSI Conference (Wednesday 10th June).
I am delighted that we will have statistician and my colleague Ursula Garczarek from Cytel as well as guest speaker Ben Davies, a Research Fellow at the Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, University of Oxford, present on the very important topic of ethical issues in data-driven decision making.
Ursula's talk will highlight several ethical issues that arise in the work of statisticians and postulate whether discussions on ethics are rarely seen as being an important part of a professional life, and also rarely integrated into scientific education. Ben's talk will focus on Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) and the various ethical challenges they have been subject to since their introduction, targeting both the uses to which QALYs may be put, and the very idea of the measure.
If this is an area that you feel strongly about, or feel that you ought to know more about it, then do please join us. As we all know, what we do in our industry is not just about the mathematics.
