Is Proximity Bias Hurting Your Executive Career?

Proximity bias is a very hot topic these days. But not enough executives are talking about how it could actually hurt their careers.

The Importance Of Being Present As An Executive

Proximity bias is essentially the “out of sight, out of mind” concept in action. If you're not in the office, if you're not visible to people, you could be seen as less valuable, be passed over for promotion, or even be let go.

Executives are not paying attention to the fact that being present, having your reputation well known and documented, is now 10x more important for you than it is for the average professional, especially if you're enjoying a hybrid or remote work environment.

People need to know how you are adjusting with the times, how you're leading through change. They need to know what your values and beliefs are, what your areas of expertise are. This has to be regularly documented internally because there are always new people joining your organization, but also externally so that in the event something happens, you can mobilize your network.

Way too many executives are waiting till it's too late—till they've been let go, or something's happened—to try to build their reputations. And then it’s not going to work for you.

How To Avoid Proximity Bias

If you want to deal with things like proximity bias or other career curveballs, you have to be documenting your gravitas—your depth of knowledge, your area of expertise—in a way that makes sure you're controlling the narrative around you.

This is how you manage your reputation. It's called executive presence, and if you aren't paying attention to it, you could be in a lot of trouble.

Building Your Executive Presence Is The Ultimate Solution

This is why, after 20 years of working as a career coach, I've built a new program exclusively around executive presence. If you'd like to learn more about this program and how I’m currently helping hundreds of executives document their gravitas, manage their reputations, and make sure they're always attracting the best opportunities and creating an insurance policy for their current career situation, then I really hope you'll check it out.

This program is a game changer. Better yet, sign up for my FREE training “4-Step Process For Creating Your Executive Presence Online.”

Reputation management is the kind of thing more executives need to be considering before it's too late. Cancel culture is out there. If you're not staying on top of your executive presence, your career could be affected.

Good luck and I hope to see you inside my exclusive program soon.
