Last week, candidates have been invited to apply through provincial immigration programs in British Columbia, Quebec, Manitoba, and Prince Edward Island. Canadian provinces and territories (except Quebec and Nunavut) have their own provincial nomination programs. Through these programs, interested candidates can apply for provincial nominations.

Each year, 105,000 PRs are admitted through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) . Since 1998, the annual number of PNP admissions has steadily increased. Both the federal and provincial governments see it as a valuable tool for promoting economic growth outside of urban areas.

During a press conference in Banff, Alberta today, the Canadian government announced that?International Experience Canada?will expand the applicant pool for the next year. The program will open on January 9, 2023.

With the IEC program, young people living in Canada’s 36 partner countries can work and travel for up to two years in Canada, and vice versa, in any of these countries. A 20% increase in application volumes, or nearly 15,000 additional spots, will take place on January 9th, 2023. This will make it probable for “approximately 90,000 applicants to work and?travel in Canada , including French-speaking youth, that will assist employers to fulfill labour gaps, including seasonal work opportunities in Canada’s tourism industry.”

Work Permit Holders Spouses Can Now Apply for Open Work Permits

A work permit is required for foreign nationals (those who are neither Canadian citizens nor permanent residents). Canadian employers can request a?Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) ?before hiring foreign workers through the TFWP, a program through which foreign nationals can obtain a work permit.

It is necessary for foreign nationals with LMIA-based work permits to find another job within a certain amount of time or to leave Canada if they lose their job. In contrast, OWPs allows foreign nationals to legally?work in Canada ?for any employer and any job, without the same restrictions as visas.

As the largest Canadian city, Toronto received high marks for its economic growth , fueled by immigration and global investment. The report cites that with half of the city’s population being foreign-born, the community is extremely diverse. It also gave high marks for education as Toronto is considered one of the world’s most educated cities. Still, Toronto has slipped from 18th in the 2022 report.

Canadian Employment Increased by 10,000 Jobs: Labour Force Survey

Statistics Canada reports that women between 25 and 54 years of age (core working age) experienced a 0.4% increase in employment in November 2022.
