Providing Sustainable Energy Access through Small-Medium Sized Power Projects
Serengeti Energy is an Independent Power Producer (IPP) that develops, builds, operates and owns small to medium sized renewable energy power plants of up to 50MW across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Why focus on smaller scale power projects?
Small to medium sized projects not only take a shorter time to develop with lower costs than larger scale projects, but the requirements are also generally more manageable, reducing upfront capital commitment.
Other advantages of small-medium sized power plants to the local communities are distributed generation and reliable electricity supply in the region. More often than not these projects are located in relatively remote undeveloped areas with minimal presence of larger generation power plants. The decentralization of energy production enhances grid resilience, reduces transmission losses, helps reduce the impact of intermittency and grid instability.
Our power plants are designed with a focus on minimizing negative impacts, ensuring that the development process is consistent with the broader global sustainability goals, ensuring the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and supporting local energy independence. Our projects are developed in compliance with international standards such as IFC performance standards.
Social & environmental sustainability is of great importance to Serengeti Energy. With smaller projects, Serengeti Energy and its partners can more easily engage with local communities and stakeholders, leading to greater support and allowing us to build trust as well as social acceptance as we meet our overall mandate which has these communities at its center.
What impact does a small to medium sized powerplant have in the community in SSA?
Small-scale power plants in SSA can grow electricity supply in a gradual and incremental manner and allow off-takers to absorb this extra supply with minimal technical and commercial requirements from their end. This eventually drives reliable and cost-effective electricity both for the community and economic development for the country.
The local community also stands to benefit through employment and technical skills development during both the construction and operations phases of the power plant, Wider infrastructure development and maintenance can also be realized through such projects, e.g., roads, drainage, river crossings community water supply and much more.
On average, a household in SSA might consume between 100 kWh and 300 kWh per month, depending on factors like urban or rural location, income level, and access to electrical appliances. Using this average range, 1MW of electricity can power approximately 29,200 to 87,600 households, depending on their electricity consumption levels. ?

How sustainable is Serengeti Energy’s operations in SSA?
By focusing on small to medium size power plants, the company is able to diversify capital deployment to different projects in different countries which minimizes single country risk or project exposure. This ensures the company can relatively absorb shocks experienced in different countries from time to time. ?Serengeti Energy currently has 9 operating power plants in 5 countries and is continuously looking to expand this portfolio.
?Serengeti Energy is one of the well-funded renewable energy power producers with the shareholding consisting of leading European development finance institutions. Over the years, the company has had successful capital raises to continue its mandate. ?In addition, the company has invested time and resources in developing the team. Our team consists of staff members with diverse experience and from different countries to ensure we benefit from diversity.
We are committed to promoting sustainability and combating the pressing issues related to climate change. We purpose to provide affordable and reliable electricity through clean energy solutions while minimizing the environmental and social impacts of our operations and engaging in meaningful consultations with all Project Affected Persons (PAPs) throughout project lifecycles.
Some of our collaborative initiatives, and impact driven projects in line with our ESG mandate include vocational trainings & Livelihood Restoration Programs in Malawi, environmental conservation initiatives in Uganda, solar lighting projects in Sierra Leone, social welfare, early childhood education & skills development in South Africa as well as ensuring clean water access in Rwanda.
We are dedicated to fostering long-term environmental and social stewardship, aligning our business goals with the principles of sustainability, and contributing to the global Sustainable Development Goals. We aim to steward a brighter tomorrow for Sub-Saharan Africa, where the benefits of clean energy extend not only to the environmental and social well-being of our communities but also enhances the economic resilience of the local communities we serve.
