Q. Who are you and what do you do?

Hello, I'm Sonja, the founder of Pick a Path in New Zealand and a dedicated Career Strategist. My focus is on empowering individuals to navigate the rapidly changing career landscape with confidence. I provide not only career coaching and interview preparation but also essential tools like CV writing, Cover Letters and LinkedIn Optimisation. I offer comprehensive support, equipping individuals with the knowledge, strategies, and tools they need for career success.

Q. What do you love most about being a provider on the Ignite Platform?

What I love most about being a provider on the Ignite Platform is the opportunity it gives me to connect with a diverse range of individuals who are all on unique career journeys. It's incredibly rewarding to share my expertise as a Career Strategist and see the tangible impact it has on people’s lives. Ignite’s platform fosters a dynamic community where I can offer my services like career coaching, CV writing, and interview preparation. It allows me to help others navigate the complexities of the career landscape, empowering them to achieve their professional goals. Being part of Ignite means I’m at the forefront of career development, continually learning and adapting to the changing world of work.

Q. Are there any particular challenges or themes you have noticed with your clients lately? How do you work with these?

Lately, I've noticed that many clients are grappling with the rapid pace of change in the job market, including technological advancements and shifts in work culture. There's also a growing demand for adaptability and digital skills across various industries. To address these challenges, I focus on helping my clients understand and navigate these trends through comprehensive career coaching. We work together to update their CVs and LinkedIn profiles to reflect current competencies, and I provide tailored interview coaching to prepare them for the modern job environment. By equipping clients with the necessary tools and confidence, I help them turn these challenges into opportunities for career growth and success.

Q. Tell us about a big win have had recently!

One of my most rewarding experiences recently involved a client who had spent years in one industry and felt confined and unsure of her future career path. She came to me feeling lost, needing direction on how to break out of this industry box. Through our sessions, she gained insights into her strengths and areas for upskilling. We conducted psychometric testing, which helped her identify new fields that matched her skills and values. This process led her to discover a career path that truly resonated with her. Together, we then worked on enhancing her online presence and crafting a personal brand that genuinely represented her aspirations and values. This comprehensive approach provided her with the motivation and inspiration she needed to pursue her new career confidently. She has since obtained the necessary certification and is excited and ready to move forward in her chosen field with a clear focus and renewed confidence.

Q. What have you been reading/ listening to/ watching lately that has had a positive impact on your wellbeing?

Recently, I’ve really enjoyed diving into resources and events that have given me a lot of food for thought. I've watched insightful TED Talks, such as Helen Tupper and Sarah Ellis's talk on ‘Squiggly Careers’ and Angela Lee Duckworth's on grit, which have provided fresh perspectives on career development and personal resilience. I also read a fascinating article in 'The Conversation' about time perception, offering valuable reflections on managing time effectively. Additionally, attending the ‘Exploring AI and the Future of Career Support’ webinar by the Career Industry Council of Australia opened my eyes to the potential of AI in career development. These experiences have collectively enriched my understanding and approach, enhancing both my personal and professional well-being.

Q. What's your favourite way to unwind?

With two small kids, unwinding often means family time outdoors. Whether it’s a bike ride by the water, a walk in nature or simply heading to the ocean. These activities are our collective breather from the daily grind. They’re practical ways for all of us, to clear our minds, reconnect, reset and enjoy the simple pleasure of just being together.

Q. Tell us about something exciting on the horizon for you!

I'm thrilled about the upcoming launch of the Pick a Path podcast, an exciting new venture that will broaden the conversation around career development and the future of work. This podcast will feature discussions with a diverse group of professionals, including recruitment experts, psychometric testing analysts, student advisors, entrepreneurs, and specialists in AI. Excitingly, Ignite’s very own Head of Delivery, Gina Nonumalo, will be joining me to share her invaluable insights! We aim to provide listeners with a wealth of knowledge and practical advice, helping them navigate their careers with confidence and success, particularly in the ever-evolving landscape of today’s workplace.

As a recent addition to the Ignite platform, I'm excited to embark on this new chapter in my career. Joining Ignite represents a significant step for me and for Pick a Path, as it allows me to reach and support a wider audience in their career journeys.
