Proverbs 27:17 - You Need Someone To Sharpen You
I believe that there are certain Bible verses that every #CEO and #leader needs to know. The wisdom of the Bible is timeless, and it still works in our world today. Today, I want to share with you a few thoughts on Proverbs 27:17
Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
This verse was recommended by my friend Jeff Schott , CEO of Tactegy
This verse is a profound reminder for Christian CEOs about the power of relationships in shaping leadership. Business leaders often focus on strategies, operations, and growth, but Scripture reminds Well Done leaders that the people they surround themselves with play a critical role in their personal and professional development.
The Importance of Peer Relationships
Leading an organization can feel like a lonely road. Christian CEOs, in particular, face unique challenges as they seek to balance their faith with the demands of business. Proverbs 27:17 emphasizes the necessity of having trusted relationships with fellow believers who can sharpen and challenge you.
This verse reminds leaders that God designed relationships to shape you. Surrounding yourself with fellow Christian leaders—people who understand both your business pressures and your spiritual walk—enables you to grow in wisdom, accountability, and discernment. These relationships serve as tools to refine your character and leadership. Every leader needs a team of leaders that will help the leader to become better.

Accountability Brings Growth
Iron sharpening iron implies friction, the kind that brings about improvement. Christian CEOs should actively seek out accountability partners or peer advisory groups that can challenge them to think differently, act more wisely, and make decisions grounded in biblical principles. CEO Experience we offer a peer retreat day where leaders can discuss a biblical business principle, business topics, problem solving, and strategic planning. You can learn more about the peer retreat at www.ceoretreatday.com
Accountability is not about criticism but about growth. CEOs often carry immense responsibility, and it’s easy to be isolated in their thinking or decision-making. By engaging with others who can speak into your lives, you allow yourself to be sharpened, developing not just better leadership practices but stronger spiritual foundations as well.
One More Second Step Comment
Proverbs 27:17 is not only a call for leaders to seek sharpening relationships it is a powerful reminder for Christian CEOs that you are not meant to lead in isolation. Iron sharpens iron, and as leaders, you must be intentional about surrounding yourself with people who will sharpen you spiritually, personally, and professionally. These relationships will strengthen your leadership and create a lasting impact on the businesses you lead.

1 周One of my favorite but also challenging verses. Iron sharpening iron by default means we have to chose humility and lay down pride. This can be hard for many.. thanks for the reminder Ken Gosnell If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
