Proud to be your granddaughter

Today marks the 100th birthday of Azerbaijan National Science Academy member, Firudin Kocharli and my grandfather. A prominent philosopher, he founded the Institute of Philosophy and Law in Azerbaijan and led it for 30 years. He had played a huge role in studying and publishing books on the history of Azerbaijan philosophy and enabled further research in the field. In Soviet Socialist Republic of Azerbaijan, where philosophy was guarded by strong ideologic control, Firudin bey had navigated the political minefield staying true to his values.

My grandfather comes from a small village in Azerbaijan, very distant from Baku, Azerbaijan's capital and main city. He was born in the family of mullah (Muslim priest), so was an improbable candidate for philosophy academic. On graduating from the university, he worked as a teacher in the village school, but his endless love for education and learning pushed him further, and not long after he graduated among the first cadre of philosophy PhD students in Azerbaijan. He propagated growth mindset in others and had educated a whole generation of philosophy academics.

What I value the most about my grandfather is how selfless and sincere he was in his relationships. His integrity has gained him people’s respect and followship. His wisdom and simplicity had always attracted others who needed advice. The doors of his home have always been open to others. Fortunately, my grandmother Zarifa khanim had always supported his work and taken on the gigantic part of raising their five kids together.

He will always be the role model for his students and family. I miss you, baba! Rest in peace.
