"Proud Mancunian"

Sometimes, you stumble upon news that makes you raise an eyebrow—whether it's a strange new invention, an unexpected consequence of climate change, or a surprising display of human clumsiness. It leaves you thinking, "Well, that's remarkable."

This week, I came across a story that hit close to home: remarkable news from my club, Manchester United. Whether you're a lifelong supporter or just someone keeping tabs, you know that when news comes out of Old Trafford, it’s often more than just a headline. It’s a moment to pause and reflect on the twists and turns that make football—and life—so fascinating.

English football club Manchester United has appointed Foster & Partners to created a masterplan for the redevelopment of the land surrounding its Old Trafford stadium in Manchester, UK.

The football club is set to redevelop the site to create "a world-class football destination", ahead of plans to redevelop the stadium, which is the largest in the Premier League. It announced that Foster & Partners, which is led by Manchester-born Norman Foster, will create the masterplan.

"As a proud Mancunian, I am passionate about the chance to rebuild on Manchester's great industrial heritage, creating a vibrant new mixed-use community, served by highly sustainable and improved transport links, providing homes and jobs for the local community, all catalyzed by a world-class stadium for the world's most famous football team – Manchester United," said Foster.

The masterplan for the redevelopment of the land surrounding Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium will cover approximately 100 acres of land located in the west of Manchester. This area, which currently consists mostly of car parks and warehouses, also spans across two sides of a canal.

Manchester United aims to transform this land into a mixed-use development that will offer multiple benefits:

  • Support the local community: The redevelopment will enhance the local area with improved infrastructure and amenities.
  • Attract new residents: By creating new residential areas, the club plans to bring more people into the community.
  • Increase job opportunities: The development will generate new employment prospects, boosting the local economy.

Manchester United’s chief operating officer, Collette Roche, emphasized that the club has a clear vision to revitalize the land around Old Trafford and that Foster & Partners is the ideal firm to partner with on this ambitious project. The club believes that Foster + Partners' expertise will help them develop a plan that not only modernizes the area but also integrates seamlessly with the community's needs.

Manchester United's plans for redeveloping the land around Old Trafford are aimed at revitalizing a part of Greater Manchester that is primed for major new investment. According to Manchester United’s chief operating officer, Collette Roche, the club is committed to helping the area thrive through this transformation.

The goal is to make this area a true destination, not just for football fans on matchdays, but also for various forms of entertainment, leisure, business, and residential facilities. While the stadium will remain the central feature of the redevelopment, the vision extends far beyond just football. The club aims to create a space that integrates seamlessly into the broader community, offering a range of services and attractions.

Ultimately, the redevelopment will reshape the surrounding area, while maintaining the prestige and heritage of Old Trafford as a central feature. The final decision on the stadium's design will align with the broader vision for the entire community-focused development.
