Proud to Belong - Behind the Code: Tyler Pingree on Software Engineering and Nuix Culture
Chat with Tyler Pingree, a software engineer based in Pittsburgh who works on the Nuix Discover product. Inspired by his childhood hobby of playing video games, the skills of solving complex problems led Tyler to pursue a career in software engineering. Having been at Nuix for just over a year, Tyler talks to us about what inspires him and life at Nuix.?
What inspired you to pursue a career in this field??
My journey into software engineering began with a love for video games that sparked my curiosity about technology. I was fortunate enough to learn programming in high school, thanks to a math teacher who introduced me to it. We worked with objects and commands, which helped me grasp the flow of programming. That interest grew as I transitioned to traditional programming and pursued a computer engineering degree. I’ve always enjoyed tackling intricate puzzles and software engineering allows me to channel that passion for problem-solving into a career where I get to do it every day.?
What made you join the Nuix team??
Firstly, the people and their passion and deep knowledge about the product really stood out to me.? Secondly, I wanted to work in a new industry, and I hadn’t worked the eDiscovery space before, so it was a new challenge. Someone used the example of ‘imagine a lawyer who has to go through hundreds of boxes of paperwork to find one piece of evidence. Well now you can do that within minutes on a computer.’ and that fascinated me.??

What motivates you to come to work every day??
The work! It’s complex problem solving, and it’s engaging and distinctive. I feel like at nuix that there you'll never run into the same problem twice, especially when it comes to our products.?
Can you tell us about a career defining moment for you????
It's a bit of an unexpected one, but being laid off in 2023 was a career-defining moment for me. While undeniably challenging, instead of feeling upset or ashamed, I embraced it as part of my journey and used it to propel myself forward. I pushed myself to do new things, for example, the Nuix code base that I work on is a programming language, I didn't know that before, but I now have the confidence to make that leap of faith and give it a go and build on my skill set.?
What do you think the keys to success are at Nuix??
Being able to adapt and take on things outside of your comfort zone! I’m working on things that I’ve never done before. I’ll be the first to say I haven’t done them, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to try. This helps you grow and be more comfortable with the variety of tasks.??
