During July 3rd - 7th our Research & Development team participated in the Viruses of Microbes 2023, which took place in Tbilisi, Georgia. Our colleague Jolanta Witaszewska presented the results of one of the recently conducted studies on the Stability of bacteriophages in animal feed on the example of BAFASAL?.


Introduction: Salmonellosis is one of the most frequent food-borne zoonotic illnesses caused by gram-negative non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica. Increasing antibiotic use for controlling the bacteria spread in animals and optimization of food production causes the rise of antimicrobial-resistance. Thus, it is necessary to look for new antibacterial agents. Proteon Pharmaceuticals developed natural preparations, which help to replace antibiotics in the food chain to improve animal and human health. BAFASAL? is a bacteriophage preparation with high specificity towards Salmonella serovars, including Enteritidis, Typhi, Paratyphi, Typhimurium, Branderburg, Hadar, Gallinarum. Since animal feed is regarded as one of the main Salmonella reservoirs, Proteon developed a new formulation of BAFASAL? which assures long-term protection of feed.?

Objective: The aim of the study was to stabilize BAFASAL? for spraying on feed for long-term storage at the room temperature.?


Methodology: BAFASAL? was sprayed on animal feed with or without protectants. The feed was stored at 25°C and 4°C for one month. Subsequently, bacteriophages in feed samples were enumerated by double agar overlay plaque assay. The bacteriophages formulation was regarded as stable when the titer of samples remained over 90% log10(PFU) compared to initial titer.?


Results: Prolonged stability has been observed for phage formulation containing protectants, when compared to bacteriophages without protectants. The significant differences were observed for both temperatures, 4°C and 25°C.?

The conclusion: The implementation of protectants into BAFASAL? phage cocktail is crucial to achieve high stability during storage and as a result, feed protected from Salmonella contaminations.
