Protective Effects of Naringenin Against UVB Irradiation-and Air Pollution-Induced Skin Aging and Pigmentation
With many of us living in increasingly urban environments, the exposure of skin to air pollution and UV rays remains prevalent. Both UV rays and air pollution are damaging to skin – UV exposure generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin. While pollution exposure can generate ROS and trigger inflammation, which can exacerbate the already damaging effects of UV, accelerating premature skin ageing generating pigment spots.?This newly published article explains how we investigated the protective effects of a naturally occurring flavonoid, Naringenin, which has gained considerable attention for its antioxidant, photo-protective and anti-inflammatory effects. We showed that Naringenin was able to protect against UVB and pollution-induced skin damage, reduce pigmentation and counteract major hallmarks of extrinsic ageing.?A heartfelt thank you to my colleagues on the SRI team in Global R&D for their contribution to the research and in writing this article!?(Read full article here)?
