Protecting Yourself While Driving Change – Part 2

Protecting Yourself While Driving Change – Part 2

Protecting Advocates While Driving Change

Remember from our last newsletter (10th edition) Maya who took it upon herself to go solo in leading the DEI drives in her company?

Well, we recognised that Maya needn’t have taken on all these responsibilities alone. It’s a stark reminder that while individual leadership is crucial, organisations must take on the primary responsibility for driving inclusivity initiatives. It shouldn't fall on the shoulders of those already facing systemic challenges and discrimination, especially by a wider society. Supporting Maya through this period has been a crucial part of my role, ensuring she maintained her wellbeing while continuing her impactful work. ????

I encourage you to review the first part of this newsletter to gain a foundational understanding of the context. You can read it here: Protecting Yourself While Driving Change – Part 1

The Broader Impact

Maya’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength within minoritised communities. ???? It also highlights the critical role of senior leadership in protecting DEIB champions while driving inclusive initiatives. Leaders like Maya are essential, but it’s equally important for organisations to step up and take on these responsibilities.

Thankfully, the personal drive of Maya is part of a larger narrative of the heartening response of communities across the UK coming together for racial justice and equity, reminding us that we must all work in solidarity for change.

I have some reflective questions for you. What were Maya’s initial motivations and concerns?

??? To educate herself? Yes! Do you want to understand the history and current realities of systemic racism and inequality?

??? To amplify Black voice? Yes! Do you want to create platforms for Black and brown individuals to share their stories and perspectives?

?? To advocate for change? Yes! Do you want to support policies and practices that promote equity and inclusion in the workplace and beyond?

????? To mentor and sponsor? Yes! Do you want to help underrepresented individuals advance their careers through mentorship and sponsorship?

??? To hold the organisation accountable? Yes! Do you want to assess their progress and transparency on DEIB goals?

This looks like the audacity of leadership, right? Yes, but no! It is somewhat short-circuited. It's important but not enough!

So, what should Maya have done?

This is what Maya, as a minoritised worker, should have done to better psychologically protect herself while advocating for change.

??? Document Everything. It’s important to keep a record of all your efforts, communications, and any resistance or lack of support from the organisation.

??? Seek External Support. You must reach out to professional networks, mentors, or coaches who can provide guidance and support.

??? Engage HR and Leadership. Don’t be shy to formally address your concerns with HR and senior leadership, outlining the challenges of systemic issues and the need for organisational responsibility.

??? Know Your Rights. Educate yourself on your rights within the workplace. This may include seeking legal advice if necessary.

??? Prioritise Self-Care. Your well-being is paramount. Take the necessary steps to protect your mental and physical health, even if it means stepping back from certain responsibilities.

?? ? Advocate for Organisational Change. Push for the company to take on the responsibility of DEIB initiatives, ensuring that the burden does not fall on individual employees.

This is what audacious leadership looks like! ??

Fostering Audacious Leadership, Together

Inclusive leadership is not just a buzzword, it’s a commitment to creating a better, more just world. ?? But as an advocate, you are of no use if you don’t protect yourself. As we move forward, let’s be inspired by the seal of leaders like Maya and yet be protected by looking after ourselves. Together, we can make a difference. ??

Stay committed, stay resilient, and stay audacious. ?????
