??? Protecting Your LinkedIn Profile: 10 Simple Security Tips for Job Seekers

I have been spending a lot more time on LinkedIn lately. I enjoy my network and the buckets of value they provide me every day. I am learning a lot. What I also see in today's tech job market is a large number of connections transitioning to new opportunities, for a number of reasons obviously.

Through these transitions, there's a wide range of things to consider and think about. Sometimes, our focus isn't on safeguarding ourselves through the journey, and this becomes a prime opportunity for those with bad intentions. LinkedIn is a powerful platform for networking and job hunting, but it's also a growing target for scammers and identity thieves.

These are simple tips you already know but they are worth posting now and again. Here are 10 simple security tips to help you protect yourself on LinkedIn:

1. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Enable 2FA for your LinkedIn account. It adds an extra layer of security, requiring you to verify your identity through a second method (e.g., a text message or authenticator app) when logging in.

2. Check Profile Connections: Before accepting connection requests, verify the profiles. Look for shared connections, mutual interests, and complete profiles. Be cautious about profiles with limited information.

3. Be Wary of Unsolicited Messages: Be cautious when receiving unsolicited messages from recruiters or connections you don't know. Verify their legitimacy before sharing personal information.

4. Privacy Settings: Review and adjust your privacy settings to control who can see your connections, activity feed, and contact information. Limit the visibility of sensitive data.

5. Regularly Review Connected Apps: Periodically check the third-party apps and services that have access to your LinkedIn account. Revoke access to any unnecessary or suspicious apps.

6. Secure Your Password: Use a strong, unique password for your LinkedIn account. Avoid using easily guessable information like birthdays or common words. Consider using a reputable password manager.

7. Be Cautious with Personal Information: While job hunting, avoid sharing sensitive personal details (e.g., home address, phone number) in public posts or with unknown connections.

8. Research Employers and Recruiters: Before responding to job offers or interview requests, research the employer and the recruiter's profile to ensure they're legitimate.

9. Phishing Awareness: Be wary of email notifications claiming to be from LinkedIn. Verify their legitimacy and avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading attachments.

10. Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter fake profiles, phishing attempts, or other suspicious activity, report it to LinkedIn immediately. Your report can help protect others.

Remember, a proactive approach to online security is the best defense against potential threats. By following these security tips, you can confidently navigate LinkedIn and make the most of your job search while minimizing risks.

Stay safe out there and happy hunting! ????

Good tips. Number 7 is an interesting one in the job hunting context. It’s not always possible to avoid giving personal info in that context, but it is important to remember what info you’ve given out, because once it is out there it can reappear as an SE pretext. I’ll also say that I may be one of the few people that doesn’t consider LinkedIn as effective place to job hunt. In my (redacted) long career in IT, I have never once got an interview, never mind a job offer, through LinkedIn. It’s just too saturated. Who wants to be the 985th applicant to a post?
