Protecting your back with one Camel at a time.

As many of you know, I was born and raised in South Africa. When I tell people this they often tend to ask me questions which tend to result in a hearty chuckle from my end.

"Do lions and giraffes walk around the streets in your neighborhood?

I find this pretty entertaining as you are more likely to come across a stray giraffe in the UAE than you are to come across a giraffe in the streets of South Africa.

Just last week Loving Dubai posted a video on their Instagram feed showing a giraffe crossing the road as two athletes were training for a marathon. See my references below for the link to the original clip.

There are so many amazing things to see in the UAE but people don't really talk about the wildlife here.

If you go for a cycle around Al Qudra Cycle track you will see countless beautiful Arabian Oryx's, bunnies & horses.

If you are exceptionally lucky, you may even see some elephants!

Since living in the UAE I have absolutely fallen in love with a certain puffy lipped mammal that roams the streets and dunes of Dubai. Yes, I am talking about camels.

There is nothing better than taking a road trip through the UAE and stopping to chat to a camel farmer about his camels.

Perhaps you could even be lucky enough to be going for a walk and have a camel cross the road to investigate whether you are carrying anything that he/she may consider to be food. Which often results in camel nose nuzzles.

Camels have fast become one of my favourite animals and coincidentally, I am now the brand representative for Patient Safety Works new product by Mangar Health known as the 'Camel lifting cushion'

The camel lifting cushion is a durable lightweight inflatable lifting chair which is designed to lift a fallen patient safely back to their feet.

FAQ: How Heavy is it?

The Camel weighs a total of 6.4kg while the ELK is a mere 3.6kg, anyone could use it, even a child!

By using a lifting aid, the person who is coming to rescue the fallen individual from the ground protects their backs from repetitive stress injuries.

The Camel is ideal for home or clinical use as it folds up to be small and compact when not in use and it is incredibly easy to use.

One of the most common questions I get asked while talking about Mangar Health's inflatable lifting cushions is:

But surely you can’t lift someone if they have fallen, what if they have a fracture?

"This is taken into consideration and before one should attempt to use the camel or elk lifting cushion they should first follow the steps of ISTUMBLE to ensure that the patient has not been injured"

If the patient has been injured it is naturally necessary to call Emergency Services. However, in the case that ISTUMBLE has been done, and the patient is clear to be lifted from the ground It is easy to aid them.

Have a look at Mangar Health's Video below detailing the time saved by using the Camel/Elk at home. Did you know that time taken plays a vital role in the health status of our elders?

Lying on the floor for hours waiting for EMS could lead to severe issues and complications.

Lifting aids might appear to be targeted only towards the elderly, however that is not the case. Whether we are discussing the Camel Lifting Cushion or the ELK Lifting Cushion they are relevant and necessary in home use or emergency services regardless of the patients age. One of the first articles I published after getting in touch with Mangar actually drew back into a real life situation where a lifting cushion could have made a huge impact on the response and rescue time.

Instead I had to stand there and watch in horror as the EMS staff struggled to lift my injured friend from the group and dropped him several times. He was 35, definitely not an elder, however, he is over 6ft tall and heavy. The EMS staff were just simply not strong enough to lift him into the ambulance. Had they had an ELK or Camel lifting cushion they could have easily risen him to a height that allowed them to get him into the ambulance and not had to strain themselves while lifting him.

By using a lifting aid you are easily able to lift a patient to a height that allows them to easily stand or be shifted into a vehicle or chair without causing any strain on the healthcare worker or EMS staff

A hushed topic which is not often spoken of is in hospital falls, which also don't solely relate to elder patients but could relate to patients of any age, whether due to ailments such as dementia, injury or just being in a post-operative state the risk of falling is incredibly high in hospitals and clinics.

The Camel and Elk easily lift patients safely back to their feet while protecting the patients dignity and the nurses back!

Patient safety is something I am incredibly passionate about. But I am equally passionate about keeping our health workers safe. The biggest reason for my interest in patient safety has a lot to do with the fact that I grew up with a mother who worked in hospitals. She was a theatre nurse and was often working long hours you can read more about that by clicking here.

The best part about working with Mangar Health is that their products protect the patient and the medical staff.
