Protecting Jersey in a threatening new world: an apprenticeship at CERT.JE

As the recent winds of both the COVID-19 pandemic and financial sanctions on Russia have changed the digital landscape, the frontline of cyber threat has drawn ever closer to the shores of Jersey. In this hour, your island needs you! And whilst everyone can contribute to our security, the newly established CERT.JE is looking for one bright mind in particular to help shield us from cyber attacks.

Cyber security is the most needed tech skill in the UK, according to a recent report from global recruitment firm Harvey Nash in which 43% of the 823 digital leaders surveyed confirm a lack of expertise in the area. In new data released by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), the number of jobs in the cyber security sector is increasing but only a third of companies have confidence in being able to access the skills they need as a “lack of relevant training is a barrier keeping young people from some of the country’s most innovative and exciting careers.”

By undertaking a digital degree in an apprenticeship scheme with CERT.JE you will receive the opportunity for both an exciting career and the skills and training to succeed.

The selected candidate will learn in a workplace dedicated to preparing, protecting, and defending Jersey against cyber threats. Monitoring threat intelligence, managing cyber incidents, handling strategic initiatives, and providing advice to local industry or community groups would all be part of a high profile role that will encompass all aspects of CERT operations while positively affecting Jersey’s overall security posture.

Supported throughout this work with on-the-job development, the apprentice would study part time towards a BSc in Digital & Technology Solutions (Cyber Security) from the University of Exeter, as well as a relevant professional qualification.

CERT.JE are looking for someone who appreciates how ingrained technology is in our daily lives and is interested in discovering and developing their cyber skills and embarking on a successful career in cyber security. The selected candidate must be passionate about using technology, data and communications to understand and solve problems, and keen to make a difference to our economy, public services and wellbeing. If you’re enthusiastic, with a strong desire to learn, please do get in touch. You will join our small team to make a hands-on positive impact on the island community.

We welcome all applicants regardless of background, gender, age or experience as long as you can meet Exeter’s educational requirements for degree level study and have the passion and commitment to see it through. Whether you have prior experience from a related field such as IT, unrelated experience or no experience at all, you are welcome to apply.
