Domino's Switzerland delivers its pizzas by electric vehicle - Ten years of emission-free pizza service

Zurich, 6 pm. For many, it's time for the end of the day. Cosy get-togethers, eating together, relaxation. No wonder that the teams at Domino's Pizza Switzerland are working at full speed. The telephone hardly stands still and more and more orders are coming in online. "Tonight we will once again cover many kilometres - and we will do so in a CO2-neutral, environmentally friendly and sustainable way," says Remzi Rrudhani proudly. He has worked for the pizza chain for many years and is now head of the e-fleet. He looks at the Domino's e-scooters, freshly charged and ready to go out in front of the branch.

Environmentally conscious pioneers: 10 years of CO2-neutral deliveries

For the family-owned Domino's Pizza Switzerland, however, the switch to electric mobility is much more than just a trend. Since 2014, when smelly and rattling petrol scooters were still standard for delivery services, the company has been relying on e-vehicles to minimise emissions.

It didn't take long to convince Rrudhani of the advantages of electric scooters back then either, when the company ETRIX E-Motos made an offer for the switch. "At that time, however, it was less about the cost advantages of e-mobility and more about reducing noise and stench at our locations," recalls the fleet manager, who helped to set up the entire fleet from the beginning.

Criticism taken on board and remedial action taken

"At that time, we received many complaints from residents when the numerous scooters set off for customers," Rrudhani recalls. The company took this criticism seriously and decided to be one of the first to convert its fleet to electric scooters.

Gone are the days of rattling and smoking scooters. The sudden calm was met with a lot of positive feedback from customers and residents. "The decision to take this new path was worth it, even though every investment in the future of a company carries risks," sums up the fleet manager. In order to implement the desired change in a controlled manner, the pizza chain gradually replaced the petrol scooters with electric scooters. Since 2017, the entire Swiss fleet, consisting of 188 e-scooters and 64 e-bikes, has been CO2-neutral.

Quiet, clean air and emission-free, but what about the cost?

"Of course it was a challenge," says Rrudhani. Today, he says, the acquisition costs for the CO2-neutral e-bikes and e-scooters as well as their operation have dropped significantly due to the long-standing cooperation with the partner ETRIX. Although the initial purchase costs were higher than those of a petrol-powered scooter, the e-vehicles quickly paid for themselves thanks to lower maintenance costs and the elimination of petrol costs.

"Charging the e-scooters is 90% cheaper compared to petrol costs. Depending on the price of petrol, a tank of petrol for a 5-litre scooter costs about 10 francs; the electric scooters, on the other hand, are equipped with a 5.5kWh battery. Also, the e-scooter can travel longer distances," summarises Rrudhani, adding, "While the petrol scooters had a range of 60 km with a 5-litre tank, the e-scooters can do up to 100 km at a stretch."

A completely independent charging system

Instead of relying on the expansion of public charging stations, the company has opted for an independent path. All drivers charge their e-scooters directly in front of the restaurants and can see on the displays exactly how many kilometres the electric vehicle still manages. If it runs low, the courier picks up a new, charged scooter at any Domino's location.

The scooters usually recharge their batteries overnight. At the end of the shift, the vehicles are connected to the grid at the respective branches for four to six hours. Depending on the model, the battery is charged directly at the scooter or taken away to be recharged. "Safety has top priority. All drivers have an e-bike checklist, which they check regularly before each shift, like pilots before take-off," says Remzi Rrudhani. Most e-scooters are also throttled to 45 km/h.

Sustainability also in the office and on business trips

"We are very happy to bring our products to the customers with an environmentally friendly and also resident-friendly fleet," also say the owners Julian and Melanie Lechner, who took over Domino's Pizza Switzerland in 2021. By switching to e-mobility at an early stage, the family business has saved more than 2000 tonnes of CO2 to date.

The Domino's team does not only pay attention to sustainability on the road. The employees in the offices work paperless and for business trips, the majority all use public transport or the possibility of online communication.

The employees are also proud of what has been achieved. "It is important to me to work in a company that conserves resources and the environment," says Jan Malik, area manager and responsible for several locations.

Mit Genuss die Umwelt schonen

Domino′s Schweiz liefert seine Pizzen per Elektromobil aus – Zehn Jahre emissionfreier Pizzaservice

Zürich, 18 Uhr. Für viele Zeit für den Feierabend. Gemütliches Beisammensein, gemeinsames Essen, Entspannung. Kein Wunder, dass bei Domino′s Pizza Schweiz jetzt die Teams zu Hochtouren auflaufen. Das Telefon steht kaum still und auch online flattern immer mehr Bestellungen ein. ?Heute Abend werden wir wieder viele Kilometer zurücklegen - und das CO2-neutral, umweltschonend und nachhaltig“, sagt Remzi Rrudhani stolz. Er ist langj?hriger Mitarbeiter der Pizzakette und heute Leiter der E-Flotte. Dabei blickt er auf die Domino′s E-Roller, die frisch geladen bereit zur Ausfahrt vor der Filiale stehen.

Umweltbewusste Pioniere: 10 Jahre CO2-neutrale Lieferungen

Für den Familienbetrieb Domino′s Pizza Schweiz ist der Umstieg auf Elektromobilit?t allerdings sehr viel mehr als nur ein Trend. Bereits seit 2014, als stinkende und knatternde Benzinroller noch Standard bei den Lieferdiensten waren, setzt das Unternehmen auf E-Fahrzeuge, um Emissionen zu minimieren.

Auch Rrudhani musste man damals nicht lange von den Vorteilen der elektrischen Roller überzeugen, als die Firma ETRIX E-Motos ein Angebot für den Umstieg machte. ?Damals ging es allerdings weniger um die Kostenvorteile der E-Mobilit?t, sondern vielmehr darum, L?rm und Gestank an unseren Standorten zu reduzieren“, erinnert sich der Fuhrpark-Verantwortliche, der die gesamte Flotte von Anfang an mit aufgebaut hat.

Kritik aufgenommen und Abhilfe geschaffen

?Wir bekamen damals viele Beschwerden von Anwohner, wenn die zahlreichen Motorroller zum Kunden losfuhren“, erinnert sich Rrudhani. Diese Kritik nahm das Unternehmen ernst und beschloss, als eine der ersten seine Flotte auf Elektroroller umzurüsten.

Vorbei die Zeiten der knatternden und qualmenden Roller. Die pl?tzliche Ruhe stiess bei Kunden und Anwohnern auf viel positive Resonanz. ?Die Entscheidung, diesen neuen Weg einzuschlagen, hat sich gelohnt, auch wenn jede Investition in die Zukunft eines Unternehmens Risiken birgt“, resümiert der Flotten-Chef. Um den angestrebten Wandel kontrolliert umzusetzen, ersetzte die Pizzakette die Benzinroller schrittweise durch Elektroroller. Seit 2017 ist die gesamte Schweizer Flotte, bestehend aus 188 E-Rollern und 64 E-Bikes, CO2-neutral.

Ruhe, saubere Luft und emissionsfrei, aber was ist mit den Kosten?

?Selbstverst?ndlich war das eine Herausforderung“, so Rrudhani. Heute seien die Anschaffungskosten für die CO2-neutralen E-Bikes und E-Roller sowie deren Betrieb aufgrund der langj?hrigen Zusammenarbeit mit dem Partner ETRIX deutlich gesunken. Obwohl die Anschaffungskosten anfangs h?her lagen als die eines benzinbetriebenen Rollers, amortisierten sich die E-Fahrzeuge dank geringeren Wartungskosten und des Wegfalls der Benzinkosten schnell.

?Das Aufladen der E-Roller ist im Vergleich zu den Benzinkosten 90% günstiger. Je nach Benzinpreis kostet die Tankfüllung für einen 5-Liter-Roller etwa 10 Franken; die Elektroroller hingegen sind mit einer 5.5kWh Batterie ausgestattet. Auch kann der E-Roller l?ngere Strecken zurücklegen“, fasst Rrudhani zusammen und erg?nzt: ?W?hrend die Benzinroller mit 5 Liter Tankinhalt eine Reichweite von 60 km hatten, schaffen die E-Roller bis zu 100 km am Stück.?

Ein komplett unabh?ngiges Ladesystem

Statt auf den Ausbau ?ffentlicher Ladestationen zu setzen, hat sich das Unternehmen für einen unabh?ngigen Weg entschieden. Alle Fahrer laden ihre E-Roller direkt vor den Restaurants auf, k?nnen an den Displays genau sehen, wie viele Kilometer das Elektrofahrzug noch schafft. Wird es knapp, holt der Kurier einen neuen, aufgeladenen Roller an einem beliebigen Domino's-Standort ab.

Neue ?Kraft“ tanken die Roller in der Regel über Nacht. Am Ende der Schicht kommen die Fahrzeuge bei den jeweiligen Filialen für vier bis sechs Stunden ans Netz. Je nach Modell l?dt man den Akku direkt am Roller oder nimmt ihm zum Aufladen ab. ?Sicherheit hat oberste Priorit?t. Alle Fahrer haben eine E-Bike-Checkliste, die sie, wie Piloten vor dem Start, regelm?ssig vor jeder Schicht überprüfen“, sagt Remzi Rrudhani. Die meisten E-Scooter sind zudem auf 45 km/h gedrosselt.

Nachhaltigkeit auch im Büro und bei Gesch?ftsreisen

?Wir freuen uns sehr, mit einer umweltvertr?glichen und auch anwohnerfreundlichen Flotte unsere Produkte zum Kunden zu bringen,“ sagen auch die Inhaber Julian und Melanie Lechner, die Domino’s Pizza Schweiz 2021 übernommen haben. Durch den frühen Umstieg auf E-Mobilit?t hat das Familienunternehmen bis heute mehr als 2000 Tonnen CO2 eingespart.

Auf Nachhaltigkeit achtet das Domino′s-Team aber nicht nur auf der Stra?e. Die Mitarbeiter in den Büros arbeiten papierlos und für Gesch?ftsreisen nutzen alle mehrheitlich die ?ffentlichen Verkehrsmittel oder die M?glichkeit der Onlinekommunikation.

Auch die Mitarbeiter sind stolz auf das Erreichte. ?Mir ist es wichtig in einem Unternehmen zu arbeiten, dass Ressourcen und Umwelt schont“, so Jan Malík , Area-Manager und verantwortlich für mehrere Standorte.
