Protecting Each Other: Inviting You to the New CoveyCommunity

Protecting Each Other: Inviting You to the New CoveyCommunity

So, here we are.

We see the rule of law tumble when a convicted felon and sexual abuser of women is elected president and proves that everything we learned in school about no one being above the law is simply untrue.?

He is threatening to elevate people, who are also sex abusers and dangerous to the health of women and families, to places of extreme power.

It is likely that during the next four years — or beyond — our government will try the patience and stability of anyone who cares for the fair treatment of women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, or people of color.

Each day this oligarchy makes it clear that they care about two things: creating chaos and the advancement of white cisgender men.

You may think I’m being an alarmist. I hope I am.?

In fact, I hope I’m totally wrong about everything I just said in the paragraphs above.

But because I do a lot of reading and study history, I’m telling you what is in my gut.?

This is going to be a slog. And it’s going to be scary.

I’m afraid. Afraid for my family, for my communities, for myself, for you. I believe we are about to embark on a chaotic journey to a place we have never experienced before.

I don’t feel safe, and even worse, I don’t have answers.

But I do know this: My entire life has revolved around building a brain trust that is bigger than the single one I have on my shoulders. This is called community, where a thousand brains are always better than one.?

As I’ve said before, print magazines were “flat” communities, in that you had a feeling of belonging when you threw that newest glossy issue of Marie Claire down on your coffee table. It said something about you and your identity. That, say, you were world savvy and that you cared about fashion and beauty and about your career or global issues. And that was an entirely different signifier than throwing down a Vogue or a Runner’s World.

Times like this call for us to gather tightly into a community where we can feel like we belong, feel safe and supported.?

Times like this call for keeping each other sane, sharing anti-anxiety tips, swapping information, and creating support.

Some of us will want to be active, calling or emailing our representatives or joining groups like Indivisible that support disruptions.?

Others will want to read and just talk about our issues, values, and goals.

All levels of interest and activism are acceptable within the CoveyCommunity. This is where you’ll find your like-minded birds of a feather. We meet every other week, and the meetings are deliberately not recorded. It feels great to actually show up in person for these Zoom events. In this moment of uncertainty, I don’t want any of you to feel alone.?

In order to keep the CoveyCommunity alive and flourishing, I must limit the CoveyCommunity to paying members (a monthly subscription is just $29). But I’m happy to let you give it a try for free for one session if you write to [email protected]. Plus, you get dozens of other great benefits that come with a CoveyClub membership that will support you in all you do.

Here’s to belonging with you in this time of need, keeping each other focused and moving forward without fear. Thank you for all you do and for all we are about to do together.

I too hope you are being an alarmist, but connecting is never a bad idea. Only community can help in times of chaos.

You’ve always understood the need for two-way vs one-way communication. It’s called connection!
