Protect your online world from cybercrime - Phishing

In today's digital age, being aware of common cyber security threats is vital to protect your online world as scammers are after your money, your personal info and your identity. We look at some of the tactics hackers commonly use to achieve their objectives. By understanding these threats, you can fortify your digital defences and navigate the cyber realm with confidence.

Here are common Cyber Security threats you need to know:

  1. Social Engineering: Psychologically tricking and manipulating people into action for personal or financial gain.
  2. Malware: This is software written with the intent of doing harm to data, devices and people.
  3. Ransomware: 'Digital kidnapping' happens when you click on links or attachments containing malicious code. Files can be accessed by hackers, who then lock your information and demand a ransom payment to 'unlock it'.
  4. Secure your devices: Install and maintain anti-virus updates and always reboot after a security update.
  5. Don't post when you going away on holidays: This information can be used for break-ins.

Phishing tips:

Phishing is when criminals send you emails that seem to be from a legitimate source. The email would includes a link that directs you to a cloned site, which they use to obtain your login details. Phishing emails often requires users to urgently respond by clicking on links. Always verify the authenticity of an email by double checking the sender email address, URL link and subtle misspellings or unusual domain names.

  1. Whaling: Targeting executives or VIPs with emails that appear to come from a trusted source.
  2. Vishing: This is usually done over the phone, when a criminal tries to trick you into sharing personal data, which is then used to commit cyber-crimes.
  3. Pharming: Pharming is when cyber-criminals make users believe that they are on a legitimate and trusted website.
  4. Spear-Phishing: Targeting a specific individual or business with phishing.
