Protect Your Employees, Protect Your Business: The Importance of Self-Protection Training
David Mitchell
My expertise lies in assisting clients achieve their goals by bringing a unique blend of discipline, focus, and strategic thinking to every challenge.
When I was in my 20s, I worked as a manager in a liquor store. To be specific, I was the owner's son and I was the night manager on the weekends. While most nights went by uneventfully - or,? at the worst, had only a few arguments - it did put me in a precarious position. How could I manage belligerent, argumentative, and often inebriated customers while maintaining an air of control? After all, there could be negative consequences if I wasn’t able to run a tight ship: if the business gained a reputation for unruly guests (or a belligerent manager) it could impact the store’s success. In those days, I had the body armor of youth and I was training in multiple martial arts…additionally, managers often carried a concealed firearm while on shift. What I am most thankful for, however, is the use of what I call “low-level management:” the ability to identify a potential threat and manage it early with words, paired with my confidence in my own physical skills (skills I hoped I would never need to use).
In today’s world, it’s essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of employees who interact with the public. While most customer interactions are positive, there's always a risk of encountering aggressive or even violent individuals. Providing employees with self-protection training can equip them with the tools and confidence they need in order to handle challenging situations both safely and effectively.?
Why Low-Level Self-Protection Training?
Not every business operates like Road House. As cool as Patrick Swayze was in that film, most of the action would end with business owners, employees, and customers in court. So the question then is this: how can we provide employees with specialized training that is both effective and responsible???
We can find answers to this question through the Civilian Tactical Association (C-Tac). This type of training can empower employees, providing a framework through which they can learn to confront challenges, prevent company losses, and stay safe, all while maintaining boundaries that are visually and legally appropriate.?
