Protect Cash Payments
Prohibit retail businesses from refusing to accept cash as a form of payment for on-site sales of $500 or less and prevent them from charging higher prices to cash-paying customers.
The Payment Choice Act was recently reintroduced in Congress in June 2023 as H.R. 4128, but it has not yet been passed by both the House and Senate and signed into law by the President.
The bill is currently in the first stage of the legislative process, having been referred to committee, but has not yet been enacted.
There is currently no federal statute mandating that private businesses must accept cash payments. Businesses are generally free to develop their own policies on whether to accept cash, unless there is a state law that requires it.
The Payment Choice Act, if passed, would prohibit retail businesses from refusing to accept cash as a form of payment for on-site sales of $500 or less, and prevent them from charging higher prices to cash-paying customers.
I just started the petition "Tell Congress to pass the Payment Choice Act H.R. 4128 to Protect Cash Payments" and wanted to see if you could help by adding your name.
