Prospectors
Bill Taylor, my father prospecting with a local gentleman (Colburn Copp) along the spur line east of the Heath Steele copper-lead-zinc-silver mine site circa 1987. As he told me the day I took this photo, this was not his first visit to Heath Steele. He had staked the original claim block under contract with AMAX (American Metals) in 1953. There were no roads then, only logging trails and he accessed the site by horse and wagon with a map marked with a big red X and the caption "stake here". When we drove by minesite, he noted that the No 3 headframe was in the exact location of that X.
The location of that X was determined using an airborne electromagnetic survey, a brand new technology in the early 50's. In fact, Heath Steele has the distinction of being the first discovery to be made in Canada using airborne electromagnetic technology. Heath Steele was a volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit and operated from 1956 to 1999 as a large and productive copper, lead, zinc and silver mine.
