Prospecting With Pops

When I was a kid I remember my dad bringing home cool things he made at work and trying to explain to me what he actually did at this thing called “work.” Sometimes he would pick me up from school and we would drive out to the plant he worked at and he would show me his office, pointing out guys he worked with. This put a face to the place he went every day and the people he worked with! I could truly understand the importance and reason for what he was doing day in and day out.

Well, last month I had the opportunity to take my dad to work with me for a few hours! He’s heard me talk about sales, prospecting, proposals, etc. Completely different than his 38 + year career working the plant life!

We hopped in the car and started doing what I call “drop-ins.” We would drive by a place then pull over and open LinkedIn to find the point of contact, industry, and number of employees. Followed by finding some relevance and “drop-in.” It was a pretty awesome experience as now he will text me saying; “Hey, I just drove by this place you should call, looks like they have about 25 employees. Not sure if they are a fit but just looking out for you.”

Having your family understand what you do is crucial and the moral of this story, some days are longer and some days are more difficult. It is hard for people to understand the grind when they do not know!

Show your family what you do, explain how you do it, who you do it with, but more importantly the details and work that goes behind it! True understanding goes a long way.

Happy Friday!

Get him on your payroll before I hire him.
