Prosecutions and Protect Mobility Vehicles

It goes without saying, Victoria Police hosts a diverse workforce. Our members, despite fronting what is already a challenging career, somehow in their spare moments continue to achieve great things.?

Senior Constable Siying Wang has always been attracted to physical and mental challenges. It’s probably why she’s a police prosecutor in the Melbourne Prosecutions Unit... and a part-time Light Calvary Trooper in the Army Reserve (amazing, we know).?

Given her unique experience, of course, we had some questions to ask her.?

  • Tell us about your role at Vic Pol (job, loc, tenure)?

For the last year and half I’ve been working at Melbourne Prosecutions Unit as a police prosecutor, attached to the Legal Services Department. My role involves:

Prosecute briefs and provide evidence in court and, judicial and administrative proceedings; Analyse allocated briefs, investigate files and conduct legal research to determine strategies for presentation of cases in court and, judicial and administrative proceedings; Liaise with key internal and external stakeholders. Prior to my time in Prosecutions, I’ve worked in the Casey PSA as a DTW and 5 years in the Whitehorse PSA in Box Hill Uniform and ED 1 Family Violence Unit.??

?

  • Tell us about your role in the Army Reserve (job, loc, tenure)?

My unit in the Army is 4th/19th Princes Wales of Lighthorse and I parade out of Simpson Barracks in Watsonia. I am a light calvary scout and my Reserve Unit 4th /19th Prince Wales’s Lighthorse is one of the 8 regiments under the Royal Australian Armoured Corps.? As a light cavalry regiment, we utilise light armoured vehicles such as the Bushmaster to provide mounted and dismounted reconnaissance, surveillance and security, and protected mobility capabilities.???

?

  • What inspired you to join the Army??

I’ve always been attracted to the physical and mental challenges aspect of what Army could offer. It is also very excited knowing the opportunities to travel interstate or overseas are available to the ADF personnel.??

  • What inspired you to join Vic Pol??

Back in mid 2016 I had moved from ACT to VIC whilst been pregnant with my daughter. Before my pregnancy I was mainly working in the financial services industry and customer services industry. Because I had some time to think about what my career should be after my daughter is born, I gathered up the courage to initiate the application process with VicPol so I could give my childhood dream a red hot go.??

?

  • Is your (Vic Pol) unit/dpt supportive of your service???

So far all the departments I’ve worked at have been very supportive of my military service and they try their best to accommodate my roster when I need to be away from my police duties to fulfill Army duties.?

?

  • What does service mean to you??

Service to me means sense of duty and sacrifice self for a greater purpose.??

?

  • How do you fit in your ADF service, while working at Vic Pol??

At the moment I am able to spend more time working for the Army because my role in VicPol is predominately Monday to Friday during business hours.???

?

  • Why have you chosen both service in the Army and a career at Vic Pol???

In my view, these two roles do complement each other well in the sense that, throughout the years Army has made me a tougher person both physically and mentally. And whenever I am going through a rough patch working my police job, I am able to draw my experience from the Army, and tell myself that “this shall pass too”.?

?

  • What do you feel, are your greatest achievements in each role??

Police: Probably hearing the members of the public expressing their gratitude towards the work we do or had done for them.??

Army: To have been regarded as a proficient Trooper as a Calvary soldier and becoming qualified as a Bushmaster driver last June 2023.??

  • What is the most unique thing (e.g. operation, activity, role) that you've experienced in the Army???

Definitely going out field.??

?

  • What is the most unique thing you've experienced at VicPol???

It is near impossible to pinpoint what is the most unique experience I’ve had at VicPol.? Any day can be a unique experience because you never know what’s going to happen. So I guess my answer will be the “unpredictability” this job brings.??

?

  • Do your skills in the Army help you at VP? Vice versa??

Definitely. I found the skills I’ve obtained from VicPol and the Army are quite frequently transferable.?

?

  • What are the perks of working at VP and being an Army Reservist? e.g. mil leave and skills???

Every financial year VicPol offers us ADF personnel 20 days paid military leave to enable me going on certain courses or exercises.??

??

THIS OR THAT

  • Cams or police uniform???

I love Both!?

  • Who's got the better kit???

Probably the Army??

  • Marked/police vehicles or green vehicles???

Police vehicles because they are more comfortable and a lot more quiet.?

  • Kapooka/Basic Training or the VP Academy???

I enjoyed my time at the Police Academy more because I could go home and be with my family on a daily basis.??

  • 10 days out field or a week of night shifts on the van??

Probably night shift given that means at least I could shower every day and not less likely to be cold and wet.?
