Setting clear professional boundaries a critical component of every great property manager. Property management training often overlooks how to set boundaries with residents but they are key to ensuring relationships are mutually respectful and beneficial to the resident, the manager, and the property owner.
In this property manager training video, I am going to show you how to set boundaries with overly chatty residents using my patented Coffee Break Ninja Trick.
Boundaries are a measure of your self-esteem and your professionalism as a property manager. They set the limits for acceptable behavior from residents and coworkers, determining whether they feel able to put you down, make fun, or take advantage of your good nature. In the case of lonely residents, not having boundaries can mean that you spend the entire day playing the part of a therapist when you have a property to lease.
If your time is spent listening to residents personal problems and chitchat, it may be time, it may be time to add boundary setting into your property manager training program. Resetting your boundaries is the first step to being more effective with your time. Weak boundaries leave you vulnerable and likely to be taken for granted by residents. On the other hand, a healthy self-respect will produce boundaries which show you deserve to be treated professionally and that you have important work to do.
