Property Elite x UWE Bristol - Becoming a Better Property & Construction Professional
Jennifer Lemen BSc (Hons) FRICS
Co-Founder of Property Elite and Projekt (RICS Regulated Firm), Author of 'How to Become a Chartered Surveyor' and 'APC Essentials - Mandatory Competencies', owner of The Dog House, Mere and PDQ Property Elite Race Team.
In this week's video blog, Abigail Blumzon FRICS MAPM, consultant to Property Elite, chats with Ytzen van der Werf MA, Programme Leader for the MSc Real Estate Finance & Investment at UWE.
They cover real estate education, tips on how to become a better property & construction professional and how mentoring can be an essential part of your surveying journey.
We were delighted with the recording and hope that you find it useful and insightful too - whether you are a student, RICS APC or AssocRICS candidate or qualified surveyor. It will also be interesting to listen to if you want to help mentor the next generation of property & construction professionals.
As a UWE Alumni myself (Jen), I was so proud to see this video being proposed, recorded and released. I can't recommend more highly the teaching or support that UWE provide - it started off my career in real estate and I haven't looked back since!

How can I get involved (as a mentor) with mentoring via UWE Bristol?
In 2023, UWE Bristol founded the Real Estate Mentoring Scheme, which connects current UG and PG students to mentors with industry experience.
In Ytzen's own words:
'Background: We noticed that many students do not have those very important connections in the property world that help you get that first job or make you realise the breadth of job roles that are available. We therefore developed a scheme where those students are matched with people in the industry that sometimes have decades of experience and in some instances have just started their professional career. Both are very valuable because they both bring different valuable experiences to the table.
Success: Since January 2023, over 85 industry professionals and 125 students have signed up for the scheme and we have matched nearly all of the students to a mentor. We recommend that mentors and mentees meet once a quarter. Some matches have led to students being offered jobs at the firm of the mentor. In other cases they have developed their self esteem and awareness in such a way that they can now enter graduate recruitment schemes with knowledge and confidence. New students are added to the scheme every semester and we have seen a constant growth in the number of mentors on the scheme as well'.
Sign up for Mentors: More information via [email protected], or head here. Jen has already signed up and is excited to be working with one of the UWE Bristol students.
Great to see professionals in property and construction coming together for such insightful discussions! Collaborative efforts like these are crucial for pushing the industry forward and supporting growth. Looking forward to more valuable content like this.
